CAD/photoshop ??
« on: 21 August 2013, 04:08:37 pm »
All hail the great and good.

I am doing a bit of admin work for an old chum in the doors and windows biz.

He wants a simple programme to include on his website which would allow customers to input a pic. of their property and then overlay our product to see how it would look.

Ideally it needs to be simple but maybe also to include sizing details so we could price the job.

Any ideas/suggestions/recommendations, offers to do the work for me????

Cheers all...........

Nigh on impossible in my opinion.  The photo size, contrast, angle the photo was taken at, altitude similarity.

Not at all easy which is why none of the other door and window companies do it.

Good luck.

It definitely not going to be a simple program :lol

I reckon if you could do it you could make a fair few bob selling it to window companies!!

I would try enlarging the photos and counting the bricks around the windows the get the sizes. Thats is as high tech. as i Get.

I was thinking about this the other day when my mum was having some windows measured up for replacement. An app for an iPad whereby the chap could just photograph the house and immediately show what the new ones will look like would sell like hot cakes.
A very basic program shouldn't be that difficult for windows in a plane wall. Ideally the app would do a bit of image recognition and find the corners of the openings for itself, but manually identifying them would do. Once it has been given the information about the actual dimensions the arithmetic to correct the size/rotation/perspective isn't very complicated.
A commercial app would mean coping with three dimensions and that would be more of a headache.

The biggest problem would be, if the rendered picture looks at all crappy (which is highly probable), the window salesman is not going to get a sale!

Yeah these things are a lot more involved that the customer realises.

A simple implementation would be doable by overlaying one image on to of another (in JavaScript), and providing settings for scale and position.

But you won't be able to adjust for perspective this way, and so would need to require that both pictures be taken looking dead ahead.

But although a relatively simple impliemntation may be possible, your results will be crappy, so I'd suggest unless there's a serious budget for development of the app it's probably not worth the effort.

My recommendation would be a really good gallery  showing previous work (maybe even case studies?), ideally with as many examples as possible for each type of house (terraced, detached, different brick colours etc).

That way the customer can find a similar property and see what they like.

Andy

I'd agree.  From looking at the code http://www.showmycode.com/ for the Flash code shows specific references to VELFAC.  It was written in-house or specifically for that company.

Of course with the code you could do what you wanted if you were unscrupulous and could code.
