Come on the Google experts - RD400F Caliper diagram
« on: 06 November 2011, 07:49:48 pm »
I'm a bit stuck with the XS400 - it turns out it has an unusual front caliper normally found on an RD400F Daytona - I have two manuals and neither tells you how to take it apart because they describe another type. I've googled until I'm frsutrated but can't find a manual
This is the one on my bike

Looking at this view the flat head screw in the haynes manual is nowhere to be seen

Any ideas?

Looks very similar to the rd250e caliper if memory serves...equally you sure it isnt the same as the xs250 one?

There's an article on restoring air cooled RD's in Practical Sportsbikes this month.  You'd probably get a good price for that caliper.    If you email the mag,  I'm sure they'll be able to help you.

It looks like a 1980 XS400SG / 1979 RD400F caliper alright.
A good source to check parts is www.cmsnl.com

Front caliper for the 1980 XS400SG is here http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xs400sg-1980_model8757/partslist/E-05.html

You should be able to see all the bolts that hold the caliper together now and be be able to dismantle.  :)

Thanks John, stupidly once I had the diagram I went ahead and started stripping it. Stupidly because the seal kit I got was designed for the wrong caliper - weird though isn't it - hour and a half in the garage and got nothing done except covering my legs in 15 year old dot 3 and I'm happy as a pig in sh*t

Now you know the right year and model it should be easy to get the right seal kit.

All the best with the rebuild.  :)

Rebuild complete whilst drunk and only one piece left over - wonder where that washer was meant to go. Will bleed them in the morning - fully expect brake fluid all over the shop :b

Coming along nicely - at least cosmetically
