Just had a look at the members map again, I feel pretty lonely up here...  :'(

Not as lonely as Darrsi must be though! He's either riding his underwater fazer to america or he's a damn good swimmer...  :lol

If people haven't posted then I'm sure they have their reasons. I'm not sure it its really cricket to just message them out of the blue for a run until they decide they want to join in on their own. If they want to jump in first, then its open season

Why join a forum if not to participate? If they're not interested they won't reply.  Considering your extrovert posts you're very conservative  :rolleyes

at was directed at tibbs btw.

Like I said, if they want to join in first, open season. Plenty of people register on forums and lurk. Be it through quick access or necessity or even through being allowed opportunity to access features that they may want to take advantage of sometime down the line.

I have a phone, does that mean I use it? If I choose not to then thats up to me. What I wouldn't like is someone calling me up for PPI and market research or even to coax me into going out for a blast on my bike if I'd never engaged with them in any way before.
Similarly, I may stick my name on the member list and plan to get involved, but maybe I'm dealing with a sick mother, or long working hours or simply can't be fucked dealing with people.  Then suddenly I get a bundle of emails telling me theres ride outs, join the map, introduce yourself blah blah blah.
The site is plainly laid out to allow all this stuff to be accessible eithout the need to pester folk before they have a chance to get their shit together.
Once they start off, they better hope I've not had a dram but until they make the first move, I'm happy to leave them in peace and engage with the hundreds, if not more, people who do engage and do go for runs and are already involved. This is usually quite easy to do through rideouts and meets. Albeit some of may have to travel but thats the nature of the beast.

But hey, I'm not seeing the overall purpose and thats cushty, I'm left to do my own thing here and that suits me and hopefully others.

This isn't an argument. It's a discussion with different points of view. Sorry Si but just because someone doesn't agree with your point of view doesn't mean that your point isn't worth raising and discussing or that they're trying to make you look like a tit, see naughty corner for details  :lol .

You raised a very valid suggestion with your first post, as adults (even Tiberius has made valid and sensible points, he must be having one of his more lucid off the drams moments  :b ) we're discussing the best way forward. I'm sure we would all like the forum to have more members and grow but we can't force people to join in if they don't want to.

Maybe I'm different but the first thing I do when I join any forum/go to a new place is look around and would thereore quickly find things like the members map/rideout topics etc. The decision may be to do nothing or make a few changes but whatever happens noone is having a go at you or arguing with you.

I very often do, Chris, I just much prefer being an antagonist (and young Grahamm, my usual sporting foe, has been quiet recently. :(  )

And on that.

Yet again Si, someone doesn't agree and you take the huff and poof oot.

The Chris fella is right, there is no argument here and instead we are utilising the use of a discussion, which is the body of much of your point here, no?
I'm mindful enough to know that I'm not to the taste of the many with the nonsense I post but its generally in jest no matter how nasty it would appear to be. I don't use the :pokefun things so maybe it gets misunderstood. Its all good. I'm a nice guy really. Very civil, in life and work. Honest Guv.
So that extends to you, friend, in that this is nothing other than words on a screen and that anything said on it should be no more than face value. There's been no insults (and oh jeez  do I feel dirty) no badness, no anger and no ill feeling, merely a difference of opinion. No biggie. Lets get on with it

Thats reasonable innit? (christ, this is like a mud bath with thora hird. POST MORTEM. Bleuergh!!!!!)

Chris

I know but it seems like there is failure to consensus on every post  :\

If you go in to a pub and sit down in the corner would you be offended if someone came over and asked if you'd like to chat ?

If you went to a bike show and there was someone standing next to you watching the motorcycle display do you think they'd be offended if you said hi ?

If you join a forum, if you're a lurker or not then you should expect some form of communication, even if it's one way.  If you're not interested in that you'd use a disposable email address to register and/.or not reply to the messages.

My post was a request to try and raise interest, the PM'ing thing seemed to taint the original meaning.

My main point is this:  Most forums make good use of sticky threads, there are virtually none here.  How to post pictures using the new process went in to general and disappeared.  PM'ing lurkers isn't a crime.  I PM'ed most of the people within a 15 mile radius of me to find out if anyone wanted a rideout.  I got responses, no one seemed annoyed or irritated and likewise if someone hadn't replied I wouldn't have been offended.

I want to go out and ride with people and naff all I do or say changes that.  I got a bike to make new friends and no one wants to ride out (maybe I'm too much of a loud mouth).

I don't know, I was just trying to make a difference and/or improve the forum experience for people.

Like I said Si, you raise a perfectly valid point and In no way do I want to discourage you from getting in touch with people.

I'm sure noone will be offended by you getting in touch with them but don't be surprised if not everyone replies, yes you have already said that you won't so that's fine.

Tibbs, Chris,
I'm okay, I always was and always will be.  I have just have a 'I give up' approach

I can tell pretty much instantly when you're not going to change someone's mind, so you may as well bug out before the stone catches miss (like it has here).

I preempt that.

Jesus, i only said someone's pin happened to be hiding behind mine, i don't mind if they don't want to participate.
If people get so upperty about a mere observation then no wonder others don't want to join.

What also needs to be taken into consideration is that some may be better communicators on a forum arena than a face to face meeting. I for one love to ride out but prefer to be alone as I find that others tend to be hesitant in city traffic whilst I is slow on twisters or visa versa.

At the end of the day its a matter of choice for the members and if they choose with hold their location then lets respect. People will use the forum for their own needs and personally a sticky of basic maintenance maybe of use such as "Which Engine Oil Is Best To Use"  :lol

Everyone has the right to voice their opinion or with hold it.

Not initially, but there's a ten second window where they need to make it count. If they don't impress there's a distinct possibility that I'll highlight that my drink is more interesting and they should take their leave. This window increses to 15 seconds for a lady, 20 for a pretty lady, and about the time it takes summon a taxi for a drunk lady

If someone joined up 6 months ago but hasnt posted anything i can see  a few reasons for it:-
1  didnt realise they could lurk without actually joining up.
2  they dont have much bike knowledge & every topic has pretty much been covered already so they dont need to post( i should just lurk as i know foc all about bikes but i see it as an alternative facebook where blokes & lassies talk about half decent stuff, well most of the time :b )

3  they thought about buying a fazer but then didnt bother but havent deleted their profile  :(

4 they got a fazer but then failed their test & never bothered to do it again.

5 they got a fazer but got banned from driving or even crashed it or got injured etc etc

Anyway theres lots o reasons & it'd be pretty hard for the admins to tell but who knows maybe farjo & co have a spring clearout now & then.

The member map seems pretty obvious to me but i also agree that lots of bikers, especially the older generation may not find these things so obvious to see or navigate through the site in general but we cant hold the site accountable for individuals lack of computer knowledge/skills.

All of the top menu buttons could be pictures depicting the subject which would no doubt be easier to interpret & stand out but at the end of the day this is a free site & doing all this extra stuff could end up costing money & lots of time & im tight as foc :D

I think he had something a lot more important to communicate than a member map.  I suspect as well that he was a likeable chap who communicated well.

In addition he had loads of people who agreed with him with which  to make his stand on.

All in all, not many similarities at all  :D

Just got round to reading this post and instead of lurking thought i'd better reply.
I checked the map 'cause I wasn't sure if I was on and found I am living in a
tree about a mile up the road from where I thought I was.
