Oh, how I laughed...
« on: 11 December 2012, 08:37:50 am »
Popped to the local supermarket on the way home last night. There was a queue of cars waiting to get in, due to a ignorant prick blocking the road whilst trying to get into the petrol station.  As you would, I filtered around the outside of the queue and came to a stop behind the car at the front of the queue who was waiting for a gap in the oncoming traffic to allow him past.

I became aware that the car behind me wasn't too happy with me overtaking and she started to move forward to push her way back in front of me.  As the front car moved away I started to pull away myself, but this other woman wasn't having it and moved forward very agressively and it I hadn't stopped she would have knocked me off.

She thought she had won.

She opened her window and started to shout at me- "Don't you know you can't..."

Followed by the sound of crunching metal as she misjudged the gap and hit the car waiting to get into the petrol station.

How I laughed as I calmly drove around her and went on my merry way  :D

I kinda agree that it's not quite simple filtering in this instance, cos you were effectively queue-jumping, but the end bit was very funny  :lol :rollin :lol  You should have moved forward and leant over to the driver in front and said "Would you like a witness"? LOL

I'd agree with you if my benefit came at the cost of someone else, i.e. I was going for the last parking space, or grabbing a petrol pump etc. But filtering round a queue - how do the cages lose out? Maybe a couple of seconds delay.   Why is this any different to filtering out on the open road?

Why should I wait when I don't have to?
All I am doing is taking advantage of a smaller size - isn't that one of the perks of riding?

Filtering: acceptable yes through traffic

I'm afraid yours to me seems nothing more than que jumping

and you wonder why cars close gaps in traffic which we could have passed through !

Hang on a moment, were you actually getting petrol, or just filtering through the queue to get past to carry on your journey?

I think you need to read the original post again Snapper  ;)

It reads to me as if he was trying to get past the que for leaving the Supermarket / Petrol Station and waited behind the car turning, pretty sensible thing to do as the driver would be concentrating on getting across the road and not looking for motorbikes, not que jumping for petrol.

Also a lot of car drivers seem to have to wait for a pump on the same side as their filler cap and leave empty pump spaces, I have been known in the past to nip in and fill up at an empty pump

That's how I read it.  Didn't think there was anything wrong with what you did, although you should've said to her "Don't you know you can't do that!" before you left  :D

I've had someone beeping at me to move when I'm filling up because he wanted to use the pump I was on.  One in front of me was out of order, two to the right (I was on the left) were completely empty  :rolleyes

So you shouldn't filter past queuing traffic?  Only traffic that is moving?

Pretty much, the only car trying to get into the petrol station was the one that was blocking the road (and got hit). Me, the car at the front of the queue and the dozy bint were all trying to get past and into the car park.

I've also filtered in petrol stations, but only when it's not to the disadvantage of anyone already in the queue, i.e. when the pump on the opposite side is in use and there is room for me but not a car at the vacant one.  I even look to see if the next car in the queue is likely to want the pump I've gone to or the one on the opposite side.  When finished filling I move forward, out of the way of the queue whilst paying.  I am courteous to other road users, but sometimes it won't make the slightest bit of difference, they will be prejudiced and jealous to the point of anger and stupidity/dangerous actions.

yep Jamieg285 i apologies and stand corrected
In my mind traffic queing for petrol you should join the que !
traffic were you filtering through on a mototway for instances is very different !
the way I read the post originally  was incorrect

but I stand by my comment about que jumping !

If filtering was banned, I'd get the fricken train to work

(I commute to central London every day)

I always queue jump if theres a free pump blocked off to waiting cars...no harm in that.Usually I am away before any car can use the pump anyway. I also tend to roll my bike out of the way so the pump is free.

I see it as kinda revenge for all the cars that like to suddenly drive up your arse or close gaps when just trying to go by ... did amuse me though  :lol
