700 MILES
« on: 08 September 2012, 03:21:18 pm »
I'm used to the 'wing on distances, sooooo comfy.
Using the Fazer for approx 700 miles solo tomorrow covering the North Lakes from Liverpool, Stanraer, Kelso, Newcastle and more before going home.
Setting out about 4am, reckon to be back 'fore dark.
Planning on about 9 to 10 stops, photographing Landmarks for this years RoundBritainRally.
Did 480 miles in 1 day on a Blackbird some years ago.
Crippled me for a week.
How's the Fazer gonna do then?
What about me??  ;)

700 miles on a fazer in one day is fine with regular stops.

I did 1400 miles round Ireland in 4 days in May. I will confess i was a tad stiff at the end of each day but a few pints of the black stuff soon put that right. :D
Lord,
Grant me the WD-40 to move those things that are stuck, the Duck tape to fasten those things that are loose, And the wisdom to know the difference.

You'll be fine mate.
:D

Big miles are no problem, just be sure to grab a water & chocolate bar (I go for Fruit 'n Nut, Lion Bar or a Picnic) at every fuel stop, maybe a coffee/red bull every second or third just to be on the safe side.

Did Glasgow to Lille in one hit on a SuperDuke, London to Glasgow on a DRZ400 and Portsmouth to Glasgow on my wee FZ6, my FZ1 feels like a foccin' sofa in comparison.

Aim for about 100 miles between stops, long enough to cover the distance, not too long that you get stiff and start to lose concentration.

Oh, we expect the photies up here too.

:lol Thanks for all the advice and encouragement.
Starnraer, Lauriston and Greenlaw are 3 places in the Borders I have to visit for the rally, with another 5 being south of the border in the NE, including Elsdon, Newcastle, Ovingham and Eggleston. Guess I'll be on the A68 some of the way, dunno if it's the best bit though.
Can't put pics on here about the landmarks till after the rally (ends 31.Oct)  otherwise I could get disqualified for revealing locations.  Going for an all rounder this year so don't wanna risk getting kicked out.  Will try and post a coupla pics from other bits of the ride here though.  Expecting a mixture of rain and sunshine, hoping to outrun the rain spreading from the West.
Off to bed now, tank bag's stufed with redbull and butties, think I'll leave the blackstuff alone 'till I'm home though.  Gonna wake the neighbours up at 4am on a Sunday.  :rollin   Ain't they just gonna luv me!   :lol

pick twisty roads as they keep you moving on the bike. Mways and Duals are the worst for causing cramping and numb bum.

It was 685 miles!  4.30am start (pea soup on the M6 over Shap) and back home at 7.30pm.
My Zumo 550 didn't take me on the A68 Budgiemurray, but on the way to Stranraer, I was surprised it sent me via the A712 'The Queens Way' instead of the A75.  I had it set on fastest route, so for most, The Queens Way would not suit that 'fastest' tag, but have to say, what a choice!  Deserted too, there and back - it was early - between 8 and 10am.  My tyres are knackered now though, much like my legs - I ain't as fit as I was and like you say Gringorojo,  kept moving and while not quite fresh as a daisy, made it back in comfort.  A far better motorcycle than the 'Bird innit.  I get more saddle sore on the 'Wing.  Am addicted to the way the Fazer (mines full monty) pulls so strong outta corners.  Attached a coupla photies as requested.  Loved the road away from Moffat, the A708 past the Grey Mares tail toward Selkirk. Stunning scenery and wonderful road, but the patchwork road repairs are a nightmare, potholes galore filled with stone chippings strewn everywhere, scary at times, dangerous mostly.  Local council should be ashamed.  Plenty of other bikes out and about, only saw one other Fazer 1000 though and there were millions of R1200GSA's / midgies too!
Always sleep uneasy after a run like this though.  Usually for a fortnight and panic when I see the postman, don't think I missed any cameras and doubt plod was hiding in the trees at OMG o'clock on a Sunday morning!  :rolleyes
Used about £90 worth of unleaded, averaged about 49mpg. Left fork seal's deffo blown, head bearings need tightening, must get new brake lines and speak with Ron Maxton over winter. New tyres and removal of AIS.  Lots to do and enjoy over winter.  It's been a perfect day! Cheers all.  :)

Oooh, Hello H.
Only one of those pic's is at/near a location but it don't show a Landmark - if you live any where near ANY of the pic locations, - lucky you - I'll be back, probably with a caravan next time, but I'll be back. :lol

That sounds like a good days ride!

We did Scotland from Wales up there in one day- drove a round a bit for a couple of days and then back down to Wales A Friday to Monday jaint and I think I did about 200 miles- I was fine.... the Mille and the R1 drivers were suffering a bit though!

Feeling bad as I get arse ache going 20 miles to work, I don't know how I'd manage that kind of mileage. I'm hoping to do some touring next year though?
Sent from my villa in the South of France.

caravan next time, but I'll be back.

Let me know when you're next near Ovingham*.  :)

Cheers

Harry

* btw - the gh in Ovingham is pronounced softly as in "jam", not as in "get" - in case you need to ask directions. (Ov-in-jam). Geordies for you.

Harry, cheers mate, I'm sure you'll know this Landmark well then?  What about the ZRX riders?  Locals?
Didn't stay long in Ovinjam, quick stop to capture the Bridge, then off to the next.
Managed a 100% all rounder this year, covered about 7000 miles all-in.
If ever your looking for somewhere to ride, the Round Britain Rally, an annual event that runs from April to October, will always provide you with somewhere interesting to aim for - recommended - and I'm here to help too if ever anyone needs advice. http://www.roundbritainrally.co.uk/index1.htm

Me and DaveG did just over 600 once when at the spring meet. Took about 14 hours but that was because we left late and the headlights on a 99 fazer are shit so I couldn't see where I was going. Loads of smoke breaks.   I had a torn cartlidge in my knee so it was painfull but fun.
