Its legal. Whether it is sensible becasue of the slow speed those things tend to do is another matter.

Not sure it is legal. The pillion has to reach the footrests not the 'mudguard'.

Nope, the "footrests" requirements is a "should" not a "must":

I think some vespas are pretty fast, like the 2 stroke 200. My father had one when I was a boy, with a backrest for the pillion. 70mph no problem. It was fun, my first biking feelings.

Ooops have to confess I've done it with my daughters aged 8 the other week on our lasses piaggio x8 125 she could put her feet on the barge boards and had protective motorbike gear on but I was more scared than her not knowing if she was holding on tight enough

Made a lot of mate's kids very happy this way, but in 0 traffic areas. At speeds of about 10 km/h. It was so good I thought: "it was worth buying a scooter just because of this!"

Smaller (younger) kids were standing in front of me, holding onto the bars as we rode. Smiling from ear to ear. "Do it again, do it again, do it again..."

So what you're saying is it's Ok for them to face backwards if they wish... And their feet don't have to touch the pegs.

Yeah Right!

It's a bit ambiguous. From my understanding you have to sit astride the machine on a proper seat facing forward with both feet touching pegs.

I cant see a prob with kids on bike , my 8 year old loves it and always wears the full gear. Not denim jacket and bloody leggings, thats just foolish. Agree as above , feet have to reach foot pegs in my view. Gives both on bike confidence and balance

yeah nowt wrong with kids on bikes if they're wearing the correct gear and the bike is suitable to carry children. but the bike in question as far as i can see isn't even equipped to carry a pillion & as goldfazer said the kids usin the mudguard as a footrest. if they were having a little bimble round the local park it would probably deemed acceptable, but the daft cnut is riding down the M1 with what looks like a 6 year old kid on the back, maybe its me gettin owd but it aint rite.

Looks like she fits on the back pretty well really!

I used to ride off road a lot when in my late teens/early 20's and my mates kids were always along for a ride, they used to love it. My son's been on the back of my bike when he was smaller, just up and down the road a bit slowly but now he's graduated from a scooter to a CR 125 and loving it. (also my mates son who is on an SV 650 now) Nothing wrong with starting them young in the right environment, my wife used to go on the back of her Grandad's R100 when she was little round London.

When should you start on bike then? I had a TS 100 when I was 12...... off road of course! (mostly)

No, that's what the *law* says. You'd be stupid to let them face backwards, but it's not illegal, otherwise those cameramen who film cycle races sitting backwards on a pillion seat would be breaking the law.

Both my girls (9 & 12) want to come out on my bike, I would not ride it without wearing proper protective bike gear so I won't take them out without it either, even the best rider in the world is a sitting duck to some SMDNSY driver.

This guy has no sense of danger for himself or his pillion just look at what they are both wearing. (or not)

That's nothing to the norm in India. Women always sit sidesaddle and the best one I saw (but wasn't able to get the camera out fast enough) was father riding, small kid sitting on the tank in front of him, medium sized kid behind him, mother sitting sidesaddle on the back with a baby on her lap......

police have always insisted any pillion must be tall enuff to have both feet on footpegs. Otyherwise they cannot balance properly on the bike or brace using the grabrail..Feck what the HC says.

I think the kiddy looks safe enough, back rest and feet firmly planted on the side covers and holding on to dad nice and tight. I think if someone wants to take their kid out on a bike that's up to them, the same as if they want to ride butt naked, it's up to them. The state says wear an helmet but that is all. Until Nanny says that it's compulsory to wear big boots and another animals skin over your own then thankfully wear what you want.
I personally wear full armour'd kit to work or out playing but i live 500 meters from the beach so have worn shorts and T shirt on my bike. I won't moan to anyone if i fall off. It's my choice stupid or otherwise same as smoking and drinking and fast bikes and woman?
