Hi-Fi question?
« on: 11 July 2012, 01:10:44 pm »
The last audio system I bought was a TECHNICS back in 1987 !!!! It cost me about £600  :eek
The old faithful is now fast approaching retirement as the tape deck doesn't turn and the CD tray won't pop out. :'(

Still the good news is that systems have not only improved but also come down a lot in price.

So. Any recommendations???

I no longer need a tape deck, record deck or a unit the size of a small car.

Digital radio and about 25 watts would be nice. As would the ability to link it to my digital TV.
Do I need docking and USB as I don't currently have a smart phone?

Budget about £100-150  ????

If the existing speakers are OK and you have a DVD player, how about an AV receiver? It'll do your TV sound, CDs can be played in most DVD players, FM radio is built in so you'd just need to add a DAB tuner.
Richer Sounds always used to be a good place to look for bargains, don't know if that's still the case.

I used to have a thumping great hi-fi system, until a few years ago when I bought this excellent little TEAC thing (link is to the latest model of the one I have.)

I was only going to use it as a dining room 'auxillary' system but it is so useful and such good quality that the big hifi went in a skip a few weeks later.
I have it plugged into my telly and it does all I need, I bought it with some Tannoy V1 speakers and it's the utter business.
Tannot V1s are a great price at the moment, again I only bought them originally as a second system but they are excellent

I've been Hi-Fi crazy most of my life and spent stupid money on it. I've got hundreds of CDs that I've collected over the last 20 odd years, but the fact is, I rarely play any of them.

I tend to use my iPod Touch with earphones or thru an amplified docking station (or sometimes through my hi-fi amp). If you do decide to consider an MP3 player and Docking Station, be sure to audition the stations with your player before buying. I plugged mine into every station on display and thought that the 'top-end' stuff was gonna be far superior, but I did, in fact, find that the one which cost very little, had the very best sound by far!!

Full, rich sound and tight, controlled bass. Amazing at the price.

You might want to check out a network enabled receiver,  thats if you have have broadband in the home.

They are linked wirelessly or via ethernet cable to the home hub and you will get access to thousands of internet radio stations. It will also play the music in your Itunes or Windows Media Player libraries on your computer, usually has FM/AM as well.

The Marantz MCR603 springs to mind, Denon's CEOL is another,  Teac has a good 'un as well.
