Just got a bill for £490

from the tax man and there's NO pi$$ing around negotiating with these guys! Pay up or lock up!

my father got a very nice letter stating he had over paid ! yes i know ! hard to believe
six months later he was still making payments to there and still waiting for a refund of over 2K
then they sent him a very nasty threatning letter I mean the king of letter were all the blood drains out of your face letter demanding imediate payment on threat of lose of your property for £500

Last time I had a run in with HMRC (for around £2k) I told them that unless they listened to my case objectively I would make every effort to use every possible tax avoidance scheme I could forever more and they could investigate all they liked, but I would only be using their own rules.

Turns out they owed me £2k.

I had something similar about 20 years ago. They owed me £1K in the end.

Normally with a PAYE underpayment, they recode your tax code to get the money over the next tax year.

Yeah, I had a £2k one a couple of years ago. I owed it for sure (I'd been paid bonuses in cash which were then declared on my P11D), but it's the way they deal with you! They make you feel like a criminal. You know - like one of those work-shy 2wats who do feck all and sponge everything.

What made it worse, was I had to ring up and delicately negotiate a repayment schedule to a bloke on the other end of the phone who could barely speak English!!!

Not sure I understand the problem here. You accept that you were paid the money, and owe the tax? So why are you upset when they demand payment?

Well, I'm upset because A) I don't like getting unexpected bills (like most people) and B) because this particular demand is a "Penalty", not an underpayment by me and C) because the penalty was caused by my employer who swapped accountants which resulted in the late return of a form and D) because of the attitude and approach of the HMRC when recovering monies owed.

And E-Z) because I already pay 40% to support all the long-term, feckin work-shy spongers of this country. It all goes to the greedy instead of the needy!

Still don't understand. If it's a penalty, not an underpayment, and its your employers fault, why is the penalty for you to pay? Assuming you are PAYE?

The penalty is for late filing of my Self Assessment for 2011. For 7 years our accountants did it. Then my employer changes accountant and they don't automatically do the Director's Self Assessment. So the accountant says "It's not our fault" and the employer says "It's not our fault". So I get to hold the baby

I kept getting letters demanding underpayment of tax (PAYE) The amount varied between £600-£800.
I asked the company accountants to write to them and after much correspondence it turned out they owed me £200 !!!
I am still waiting for the final payment though?

Can't help thinking that some slimy bean counter decided to send threatening letters out to everyone and those who meekly pay up swells their already bloated coffers.

I think the clue is in the name -'Self Assessment' - it's your responsibility to make sure it's done .... And my accountant always gets my OK before he files it, so I know when it's been done (or not).
