Unfortunately, this error is nearly always completely independant of the clients operating system, browser and hardware configurations. Its to do with the service being provided by the host. Not much any of us can do until they figure out whats causing the errors. The fact that it is so random is incredibly odd - its more than likely a faulty module...

They say that when the backups run the server overloads which causes the errors, and that they're looking into a fix...

Hmm... Strange, that should cause something more along the lines of a 502 (Bad Gateway), 503 (Service Unavailable) or the most common of these three a 504 (Gateway Timeout). Though to be fair, 500 (Internal Server Error) does serve as a default error if all else fails...
