Good roads in South Oxfordshire.
« on: 30 May 2012, 03:29:43 am »
Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if this is the best place for this post but i'm currently working in South Oxfordshire in the Wallingford/Didcot/Abingdon area and i'm struggling to find any good roads that aren't either always traffic heavy or dotted with lots of 40/50mph zones every other mile or narrrow little roads with loose surfaces and high hedgerows meaning i don't dare push hard.
just wandering if anybody could point me in the right direction
thanks a lot, look forward to trying your suggestions

When I had friends in Gloucestershire I loved the run along the A417 from Streatley to Cirencester. There are some excellent stretches through beautiful countryside... used to set off at 6:30 in the evening to miss the worst of the traffic and arrive a couple of hours later with my visor opaque with splattered midges and a huge grin on my face.
Unfortunately, even before my friends moved a decade ago, sections started getting double white lines, 40 limits and speed cameras... so I don't suppose there's much fun to be had along there now. :(

I find the A40 is a rip snorter of a road London to Oxford and back, there are bits you can 'MAKE GOOD PROGRESS'  :eek .

yes...use that stretch quite a lot...also try going south  (a4074) towards reading over the m4 onto the a33 to basingstoke and back on a339 (i think) to newbury and then a34 back up towards oxford  :)

Following on from the Reds post, take the A4 out of Newbury to Hungerford then take the A338 to Wantage and then A417 back to Streatley then the A329 back to Oxford

Try the  A40 to Burford then B4425 TO Bibury ( worth stopping here ) carry on the B4425 to cirencester then the A433 to Tetbury   , mainly  national speed limits between Burford & Tetbury  , great sweeping bends , a few twisties , watch out for hidden dips  no gatso,s between villages or  in  Tetbury , Bibury , none on the through road thru cirencester . Watch out for mobile cameras ( never seen one along here myself )
