Am I being thick?

I bought a repair kit for tyres with a view to doing a more permanent fix on my rear tyre which picked up a small nail about 300 miles after fitting.
It came with a selection of patches, glue, some mushrooms and spare valves and 5 of these weird things:-





Can someone tell me what they're for?

Only used them when I had a massive shard of glass in my tyre and the little rubber strands I carry were to thin/small to use. The RAC chap came out with what you had and plugged my tyre. However, are they actually a permanent fix? I was under impression to permanently fix a tyre you need to use a big mushroom type thing from the inside. As surely anything you push in from outside could potentially pop out too? (but do correct me if I'm wrong here, I'm no expert).

Yes, a mushroom was what I'd intended to use as that felt like the most secure way to repair it. (Though the hole in my tyre is small and I doubt I'll manage to pull the 1/4" stalk through... and I'm reluctant to make the hole big enough, potentially cutting cords.)
These things just puzzled me as I can't see how something with a great big figure-of-eight hole in it can be used to seal anything. Rema don't seem keen on publishing instructions!

It would seem it's an even messier version than the old stringy rubber type kit with the bradawl tool with the hole in the end.

Good video DARRSI , I looked but couldnt find anything  FAZERIDER , i take it your doing the repair at home , if thats the case would'nt it be best to remove the tyre and fit the mushroom from the the inside ?


one the subject of  "on the road repairs" i have a repair kit that uses the canisters to inflatd the tyres after the repair , had it a few years and was wondering what sort of shelf life do these things have ?

RED98. Yes, that's my plan. I was just curious about these peculiar things.
As for CO2 cylinders, everything I've read suggests they're useless. I do have a pair from a previous kit which I carry about with the Crafty Plugger, but am awaiting delivery of a small hand pump. Electric ones were an alternative, but I couldn't find one I can fit under the seat and they do hammer the battery.


DARRSI. Thanks for the link. I had blundered across it during my initial search, but the guy took so long to get to the point that I'd skimmed through the video and missed that he was using these TT660 bungs. Perhaps, since they're specified for crossply tyres and square edged, they should be oriented at 45º, but he didn't mention that.
