Hi All, New member looking to get a Gen 1 Thou
« on: 05 January 2016, 10:00:49 am »
Hi All

I'm Tom from West Sussex.

I ride a supermoto (DRZ400SM).

Got a guy wanting to swap a Gen 1 2001 Fazer 1000 for it. Low miles, looks tidy. Was wondering any common things to look for with the Gen 1 Thou? I've heard about the exup valve getting stuck if not cleaned (Symptom is sticking at 7000rpm or something?) but was wondering about other common issues?

Hopefully I will join you all in Fazer land if all is well and good.

My best to all.

Hi and welcome.

The EXUP valve needs regular servicing to ensure it doesn't stick. When you turn on the ignition, you should hear a whirring noise as it cycles if all is ok. The 7k rpm indication is the EXUP fault code that the rev counter will display if all is not well. It will flick to 7k, then read normal revs, and repeat.

What mileage has the bike done? 25k is the big service mileage - it should have valve clearances checked on this service, but they will usually go happily beyond this without requiring adjustment.

Rear shock is a weak point. They're not brilliant in the first place - 15k miles will usually be enough to see it well and truly shot. Loads of guys on here go for an R6 item to replace it (devilsyam on here is your man - it must be the right one), but Nitron are also quite popular replacements. Even a new Hagon will be much better than a high mileage standard shock if you're budget conscious.

Bear in mind that even the latest of these bikes are over 10 years old now, so you should look to replacing brake lines if not already done.
Other than that, they are excellent machines that will do pretty much everything well - I don't recommend off-roading though  :lol

I'm only answering this really because no one else did, which surprised me - I'm not the most technically qualified person on this site, but if you buy one, plenty of folks here are both knowledgeable and helpful.

Yep, deal went though, the bike was clean and have ridden it to work twice now, no issues that I've noticed. Nice and smooth, hit a ton without even feeling it on the way back front the swap.

Thanks for your reply, I'll keep that all in mind. Bike is on nearly 29k miles.

Silver, but thinking of mods to do to it and getting the engine painted is one of them. Probably expensive though. It's already got a very nice sounding aftermarket can so don't need to worry about that. R6 shock is on the list as well as fender extenda.
