Slipper clutches
« on: 27 February 2012, 10:15:54 pm »
Anyone any thoughts on these? I'm gonna presume an early R1 slipper clutch would fit the gen 1 motor, any one fitted one already? Any point?

Neil Spalding (of Sigma and MotoGP commentator fame) explains here http://www.sigmaperformance.com/slipperclutch.html
He owns Sigma Performance so may be a little biased, but I like the way he has written this.

Unless you are down shifting at such high revs that the engine braking may make the rear wheel lock, no real point to them.

Right, not got time to read all that now but from a few sentences I guess that it's allows some slip of the clutch when banging down gears in high revs to prevent excessive engine braking/rear locking/engine damage etc etc?

Cool, I don't need one  :D

One would assume from the word "slipper" that it's a perfect accessory for a gen1 to match any pipe you may have installed.

I had sold a '99 R1 last year which had a SIGMA slipper clutch fitted. The early R1s (up to 2003) have a diaphragm type clutch spring (not ideal and replaced by coil springs on post '03 R1s), so an early R1 slipper clutch would not fit anyway, and even if you could make it fit ('cos there will be some smart Alec who has the talent to do it I'm sure !!) it would have the less-than-ideal diaphragm spring.

The Gen 1 Fazer clutch has coil springs (as fitted to post '03 R1s) which are generally regarded as much better.

Not sure how the above is at all relevant to this post, but just thought you'd like to know anyway  :rolleyes

Cheers,

Fletch
