Sprocket Cover

After hearing all the scarey stories about Fazers with failing sprocket nuts I thought I'd go check mine just in case. I would have just gone ahead with it as I have done with other bikes, but I had a Haynes manual at hand so thought I'd have a look at that first.

Anyway, it said that there is a gasket that needs replacing if you take the sprocket cover off - is this correct? On previous bikes, it's just been a matter of removing the cover, usually plastic, and that's it. All I want to do is check the sprocket nut and shaft - do I need to buy a gasket beforehand or am I getting confused?

there is a gasket.  When I removed mine to check it disintegrated in my hands.  I bought a new one from Yamaha, think it cost about £6.

Great, thanks for clearing that up, I'll order one now. Out of interest, do you know why there is a gasket there? Is this common on some bikes?

Yeah, that's what I thought - I can't figure out why it would be necessary there...

In some applications a gasket is fitted to stop fretting on the mating faces, but I don't see this as one of those situations. Mine has always stayed intact so is still there, but I tend to agree with Jake that it is not necessary.
If you do away with it I would check the clutch adjustment at that case end because you will loose a slight amount of clearance.

The only use i can see for  gasket on that cover is to stop the grease thats flung off the chain leeching through the join where the gasket is and making a mess on the outside of the bike.


My gasket broke into 3 pieces when i took mine off to fit the new nut and washer kit and i just used some hylomar gasket jointing compound, but you could use anything thats to hand, even a bit of silicone bath sealant would do the same job

Thanks, glad I asked as I was worried it had a more important function. Perhaps it's not worth buying one after all!

I have never replaced the gasket,  I like to take the cover every now and then to check my sprocket nut. I don't see the point of the gasket.
