I don't whether this is possible, but I wonder if you can get the sump off without taking the engine out.
That may allow you to check for crank and big end play.
It is possible to take the sump off with the engine in-situ, but it may not help diagnosis... this is the view you'll have:

... access to the big ends is pretty limited!

put old oil back in to start it up, didnt see the point in putting new oil in to find the sound then draining it again after, it appears to of dissapeared.. even up to 8000rpm

drained oil put new oil and it sounds tons better, need to get out and give it a propper ride though.. i did notice something odd..

My speedo appears to have tourrettes , turned it on and it went to 40mph then to 0 then whenever i start it it seems to go up between 0 and 40mph.. it stopped doing it on the final 2 tries but it may do it again

Any ideas?

To PaulFZS

Mine rattles when cold and then tends to quieten down.
First noticed it when it had done around 50,000 - 60,000 miles.

It's still rattling when cold, but now it's done 77,000 miles, but it still pulls and runs well.

I reckon it's a bit down on power from new, and it does use some oil, but not that much.

Maybe the noise you're hearing isn't a terminal issue.
From my experience Fazer motors are quite durable.

Are you sure you did not pop a hole in the down pipes, they can make some really funny sounds  :)

Dont think its that pretty sure it was inside the engine, sounded like my zxr 750 did when the oil drained itself. Sounded mechanical

Started my bike up and stuck my ear on the clutch case and it sounds to be coming from the clutch.. although ive just remembered i forgot to try it with the clutch in.

On the thou gen 1, this would be a fault code, which the manual should tell you about. Would've thought similar on the 6?

Actually, on the thou, it'd be the rev counter giving a code, but still...?

Same as the 600, the rev counter gives the fault codes, mainly for speedo sensor or TPS.

All clutches rattle a bit some more than others that's normal. But normally they don't all of a sudden start rattling at certain revs

Ok so took bike out for a small ride about 5 miles.. was running fine untill it got mid hot then it would rattle at 4k under hard acceleration.. on the way back it was super hot and would  struggle to hit 60mph and started to rattle constantly..

Pulled over for a quick video.

That certainly is not normal and does not sound good.
For starters, put bike on the side stand, remove the clutch cover and have a good look inside.
Last rattle I heard similar to that was after a fellow replaced the clutch and stripped one of the clutch bolts.
I certainly would not be driving it again until I find the problem.

Was the bike ever dropped?

Bikes not been dropped that i know of and no signs of any damage from being dropped, all engine castings and fairings in good condition, crash bars look fine.

not sure how i could strip a clutch bolt whilst riding. and it only happens when warm then hot.

Not saying it is, but just a comment on the last time I heard a sound like that something was broken inside the engine. I have seen clutch bolts fall out and strip some time after the work was done because of hamfisted assembly.

Was there any work done on the engine recently other than the oil change?

If it struggles to get up speed it sounds like something is tighting within the engine and the only thing I have seen to do it was a dodgy shell bearing. I would strip the clutch, remove the sump and cam cover as a first line of checks.

This noise sounds very familiar to me from years back.

Is it definitely the clutch area, i could be well off here but what about the water pump?
The fins can break causing noises like that and it could explain the overheating.

I'm hearing two things going on, that buzzing noise, plus a poor sounding engine noise as well.
Just out of curiosity, check your expansion tank and see if the level is correct, or at least how you last remember it?

If it all looks normal just ignore me and i will quietly go away.  :rolleyes

Its hard to tell where its coming from, if i put my ear up to the clutch case there is a  tapping noise but doesn't sound the same as the knocking when i open the throttle.. best way to describe it is it sounds like a con rod bashing around the cylinder.

my zxr 750 sounded the same when the cct went though... the shells where knackered.

I'm thinking a trip to a mechanics is a bit overdue mate, noises like that can only make things worse.

I know it's always nice to try and sort things yourself but the longer you leave it the more damage you might be doing.  ;)

So... i figured its a pretty bad problem but riding 5 miles letting it cool then going 5 more to a friend whos a wizzard with bikes and owns about 30 would be fine seeing as when its cool its perfectly fine...

Managed to get 15 miles with no signs of rattle or odd noises.. i thought it had cured itself.

Got most of the way untill i hit the motorway and hello screaming engine and down to 30mph... pulled over and got recovered...

got to friends got cover off and camchain seems to be fine... rattle sounds like its coming from the cylinder :(

Left bike there and had a £22 train ride back home.

Now im stuck what to do... do i take the engine out strip it and try fix it or do i cut my losses and sell as spares or repair.

Depends on your situation. If you've got a bit of time sure you might as well strip it and see what's going on inside. You could get a used head and cams cheap enough if that's the problem or if you need it for everyday transport and you don't have the time to fix it maybe go down the replacement engine route, they're fairly reasonably priced you might even get one on here.

The most common reason for the crank going on a fazer is that it has been down the road on it side with the engine revving high before the fuel runs out.

Are you going to fit another engine? Repairing it is a very expensive option.

I was going to fit a new bottom end as theres like 5000 on ebay for <£90

but a guy not far from me has an 03 fzs engine with only 23k miles fsh and valves just been done for £250.

for peace of mind i think im going to replace the whole engine, my fzs is currently on its 2nd engine with unknown mileage so the top end may well be almost dead too.
