Fz6 S2 or not ?
« on: 27 April 2014, 09:40:01 pm »
Hi and im sorry if this has been posted somewhere but  i tried the search and am on page 16 of the forum with no luck yet.

Basically im hoping to get a Fz6 next month (as long as i pass my test) but been reading up there are 2 versions of them, a normal one and a more higher powered S2
How do you tell if its a standard one or a S2, thinking of buying one private but don't want to get stung with a normal one.
is it like all UK 2008+ are actually S2 or something..
Thanks for any info

The FZ6 is based around the fuel-injected R6 engine and replaced the old carburetted Fazers which used the Thundercat engine when the emissions rules changed in 2003.

The FZ6-S was produced from 2004 to 2007 when it was replaced by the S2 which has had a few minor tweaks eg better fuelling and less snatchy throttle coming out of bends and slightly better brakes, but there's not that much difference between them and AFAIK the S2 doesn't have noticably more power.

Generally the easiest way (apart from production date) to tell them apart is to look at the instrument cluster, this is the FZ6-S and this is the S2.

Many many thanks, nice and easy to see then, just look for the bigger clock set up (and better imo) and you know its a S2

Reason i thought it was more power was from this from Wikipedia but i know wikipedia isnt always right.

57 kW (77 PS) (76 HP) @ 11,500 rpm for Standard version,

72 kW (98 PS) (97HP) @ 12,000 rpm for S2 version

Seemed quiet a jump up

Ok, that's news to me. A bit of googling comes up with this link which may explain:

Thanks for clearing it up, fz6 looking a sure favourite  at the moment for my 1st bike, closely followed by a gsx650f, er6f..  Seems so much choice and the more i look the more bikes i find lol

Got a feeling any of them will be fine for a 1st bike but friend had a fazer many years ago and loved it.

Article from Yamaha when the FZ6 was launched in 2004

http://www.yamaha-motor.eu/designcafe/en/about-bikes/sport-touring/index.aspx?view=article&id=441541&segment=Sport Touring&archive=false&page=1

Power stated is - "The maximum power output of this engine has been set at 72kW (98PS), which is reached at a rpm of 12,000. The maximum torque has been set at 10,000 rpm."

As been mentioned the instruments or you could just look at the fuel tank it's got S2 written just below the fuel cap that's about 2 inches high, well least it has on mine and looks like factory not after market.

Apart from the clocks The other really big difference is the front design of the bike - the fz6s has a screen which anchors both sides of the front and one just under the nose of the bike - the biggest problem with that was if you ever dropped the bike the impact would go through from the side and snap the bottom part  of the screen near its anchor part!  The s2 went back to the old way of doing things which was to have the screen as a smaller insert into the body of the front - much more economical to replace if needed and much prettier!!! Obviously none of this an issue of you get the naked versions!!

You cant always go by the clocks particularly on the changeover year , mines an 07 model S2 with ABS and it has the clocks shown in the first link , I bought it new in 07 so have the invoice ,handbook/manual etc all for the S2 ABS .

May be wrong but always saw the S2 as the one with bolt on rear footrest brackets.. Then again seems folk are listing bikes as S2's with the frame welded footrest brackets???..  :rolleyes
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it..

My 07 S2 has bolt on rear footrests, I got the new instruments on mine but it's not the ABS version so seems different there as well would expect all 07's to be the same but they aren't.

something wrong somewhere then , the plate on mine is 07 , registered and books for the S2 and even the last service I had and frame numbers/engine coming up on parts as for the S2  but clocks don't match and frame / engine are silver !
Will checkout the brake pots tomorrow  :lol

I guess going by reg prefix will never be entirely accurate due to dealers sometimes selling off older non pre-registered stock..

Mines a 2006 and not an S2 but has black engine and frame, so this isnt quite right

Apologises the reference was to the fairing models

Clocks
Front Brake calipers
Swinging arm design

To remove all doubt as to the model check the code under the seat

FZ 6 S -  2004 is 5VX1
              2005 is 5VX6
              2006 is 5VXB
              2007 is 5VXL

FZ 6 S2 - 2006 is 5VXD

Check the code under the seat and post them here and then I can tell the model you have  :)

I've had this, purchased a brand new 2006 Aprilia but as it was only 2 days away from the new registrations it was registered on an 07 plate although there where only a few minor differences between the 06 and 07 models, did make it slightly more confusing as under the seat it gave numbers for the 05 model for replacement parts.
