Do Thundercat cases fit?
« on: 19 September 2013, 11:51:17 am »
Got a '98 FZS600 for my next project bike.

I've been doing a fair bit of research, however I haven't found an answer to this question: "Will Thundercat cases fit on the FZS600?"

Visually they look the same and I just wondered if anyone had actually fitted them OK? The reason I ask is because I'd like to fit some of the NRC toughened engine cases, but they only appear to be listed for the Thundercat not the Fazer.

If you mean the side cases like the 'peanut cover' then yes, they should fit.

If you mean the likes of crankcase casing, the bottom end dimensions are almost certainly the same, but  the Cat has no front frame mounting points due to it's Deltabox frame.

Sorry I mean the cases on the ends of the engine, the ones that break when you crash!

Would they not have the same part number on AJ Sutton if they were the same?

That's a good idea, I'll have a look.

This is what I found. Just the two letters at the front that are different. Anyone know if that makes a difference?:

Generator cover LEFT
4YR154150000 FAZER
4TV154150000 1997 Thundercat YZR600R

Cover RIGHT

I don't know for sure but I once looked into this and came to the conclusion that they were interchangeable and the NRC covers would fit.

afaik, the only difference between the tcat and fazer covers is the colour. Might explain why the part numbers are slightly different

I would've thought the different letters were per bike, but the fact the other numbers are identical would suggest to me that they're the same thing......but don't quote me on that.

If they are a different colour then I think you're right, it's probably a colour code.

I don't mind you copying at all. Here's the deal though. I buy them and if they don't fit, you pay me half the purchase cost?  :D

I've been looking at these too and wondering  :rolleyes . I'm also in two minds as to whether to take the gamble but I would advise doing a good search on Ebay if you decide you want some. You can buy them from the USA for half the price of the ones for sale in the UK for the same item. I appreciate that there would probably be import duty added but it wouldn't be £150  :eek .

I wont tell you if they fit or not then!  ;)

I only thought about them as I may take my project bike racing once it's finished. Was hoping someone had actually done it and could confirm they fit OK. I guess I could always ask NRC direct. In fact I will.

Yes I've had a search on eBay for some time now. New ones keep popping up, but I was hoping for second hand.

Seen the ones listed in the USA and would probably go for those for the reasons you've stated.

But take the gamble. Then let me know!  :evil

Looking at the prices on the AJ SUtton website, if you go for the NRC ones from the USA then they are about £80 more expensive, excluding P&P. That's not too bad for something that is much stronger than the stock cases, which crack at the slightest provocation.

Go on, you know you want them.

Got this reply from NRC today:

Sorry Ruby, This model was not imported to North America and we never had the
opportunity to visually inspect and test fit ours covers to it. This will be also our first inquiry about this model

If you are confident with your own mechanical ability, I suggest that you compare the OEM part # for the covers, gaskets, charging stator and rotor, starter idler gears, pins and starter clutch between the 2 models and IF ALL THE PART # MATCH, only then try test fitting our covers. Also, slowly turn the engine over by hand (with the spark plugs removed) before starting to make certain that no internal parts drag against the inner cover surfaces, otherwise serious engine damage may occur.

Regards,

LarryNRC

I'm off to work now so I'll check out the other part numbers as he suggests later on.

I have done a check of part numbers and it doesn't really help (see below). I found this which explains how the Yamaha part codes work: http://www.cmsnl.com/help/faq/95_yamaha/

Basically the first three numbers denote the model and these are the most important numbers, also confirmed by the NRC guy. The next five tell you what the part is. Looking at three different models (2002 R1, 1999 R6 and 2009 R6) they all had the same number for the left side engine case, even though they looked physically different. So it doesn't seem to denote that it's the same part, just the name of that part written as number. Hope that makes sense.

Having gone through the checks the guy at NRC suggested, I find that the right side case, the starter cover, will probably fit OK as all the part numbers for the components it holds are identical, other than the actual cover itself. The stator side (left) doesn't agree on anything!

My conclusion after this research is that I just need to buy them and find out the hard/expensive way! However my gut feeling says they will work as the Fazer motor is basically a reworked Thundercat (YZF600R) motor. And they look the same!!!
