Fuel Light
« on: 05 September 2013, 11:47:33 am »
Hi All,
New to the Fazer after 12 years off bikes and loving it!  Planning on giving it a good clean up once the cold weather starts coming in so I'm probably going to be firing in a few questions over the next few months!
This was all my own fault so I don't need that pointing out to me, but I'm riding home from work last night with the fuel needle on E.  I was a few miles away from the nearest garage but it's ok I though as the light hasn't come on yet so I have a few miles left in the tank.  I'm about two miles away and the bike cuts out on me but no fuel light came on.
I'm trying to work out what the issue might be, when I turn the ignition on the fuel light comes on so I know it works and the fuel gauge is working too.
Any ideas where to look?  Its obviously not something that is urgent for me to fix but now I know its not working its going to bug me!!

Thanks
Adam

I'd guess at a faulty sensor or dodgy wiring. get a multi meter and see if you can track it down.

Should be reasonably staright forward to ride without it working as long as you use the trip counter and keep an eye on the mileage you've done since you last filled up. I always reset my trip 1 after every fill up and when it gets to 200 milesish then I'll fill it up again. There is always loads left in the tank but no point risking it.

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Yes I'll be fine, the gauge its self is working so i'll know exactly how much I have left in the tank and that I can go exactly 260 miles till I stop  :)   Its just the light that didn't come on and now its bugging me as to why!!

Sure there is a wiring diagram in the downloads section or if you have a haynes book of lies there are diagrams of wiring in there, they may or may not help.. haha.

Hope you get it sorted though, as you said it's not important but it'd bug me too.

I nearly ran mine dry a week or so ago. The light didn't come on until the gauge was well below the 'E' mark. Nearly 20 litres to refill so it must have been on the last dregs.
Perhaps it isn't a wiring problem ? Perhaps it's just the sensor thinking there is some petrol still in there. Faulty sensor ?

I wouldn't dare do that.... according to fuelly I get around 50mpg but the fuel light starts coming.on around 140 miles.  I find it had to believe it's only 2/3 empty at that time :-(.  I'd be interested in knowing what the shape of the fuel tank means... I.e.if the top third is narrower than the bottom 2/3 and the effect on the sensor.  Mine a a gen1 too tho.
Opinions are like A**holes, Everyone has one.  Some people seem to have more than one though which is a bit odd.
