starter/solenoid question
« on: 03 August 2013, 06:31:42 pm »
Having an issue with one of my bikes.. In the morning when pressing starter the bike spins briefly then stops. When i press starter button there is a buzzing sound but the engine wont turn over. If i rock the bike back and forth in gear and press the starter it fires up. I tried shorting the solenoid this morning after it wouldnt turn over and it fired up? Question - is it starter or solenoid? it would appear starter 'rocking back and forth' and also solenoid 'shorting'  :(

It could be a faulty solenoid or a sticking starter clutch, if you short the main terminals on your first start of the day and the engine spins over ok then you can suspect the solenoid, if the fault is still there check your battery first then the starter clutch for wear or damage.

Also check the wiring plugs for corrosion

I find if i rock the bike back and forth in gear then retry it starts, so that makes me think its the starter, but when i short the solenoid it also starts.. :rolleyes

Tight and clean connections.

I think your starter motor is on the way out tbh; do, however, check your battery first.

Battery.  Solenoid.  Starter motor.  In that order. :)

Tested battery and solenoid and both were fine, so bought a starter for £15 on fleabay. The first thing i noticed when rotating it was the new starter spun freely, while the old one was quite stiff to rotate. Fitted it and it spins over like it's meant too. Carbs are off at the moment as it leaks fuel when it's on the sidestand, so i'm going to replace the float needles. Ps.. i bet you are all thinking Fazers are totally reliable... Well they are, as i was looking for input as certain 'other forums are sh#t' and you guys are ace at helping out with good info. Pps it was my Gsxr 750 1986 slabside with 29mm flatsides. Thanks again for tips :)
