I am looking at new bikes too, but I am keeping my 2004 Gen 1 owned from new.

Looking at ZZR1400, K1300S or Tiger Explorer, new 1200GS or Trophy, 1200RT.

I think I have discounted the last two as they seem so large, but will have a test ride. I am still not sure I want a Clitoris pretend off roader, but want a proper test ride to convince myself either way. My heart says 2012 Green ZZR 1400, but my licence says forget it.

Good luck with the new bike, I really like the Tuono but I need more wind protection at my age  :o

Better stay off the baked beans then!!

Seriously though don't discount the new GS it is a good bike and I have never ridden such a quiet bike wind wise, and kit has some grunt too

Have recently read about the new KTM 1190 Adventure - if it fits your wallet, might be worth checking out? (Write up in current ish of Bike Magazine) Sounds pretty good - can tour, commute, scratch and apparently just pretty much put a smile on your face?

Excellent choice mate. I have a tuono v4r and it's an utterly outstanding bike to ride. If you get one the best mod is an aprilia gel seat, as the standard ones a bit thin! Disconnect the exhaust flapper valve cables to improve driveability, as it is only there to reduce noise till 5500 rpm for noise regs. 'IT'S NOT AN EXUP VALVE'! Apart from that there is a recall for certain vin numbers for a coolant manifold replacement and also a few cases of headlight condensation.Brilliant bike 8)
If it's broken, it's not fixed.

I had the same decision - what could replace the Fazer 1000? I tried a lot of bikes, from the Ducati MonkeyStrangler to the Tuono V4 to the Z1000SX, but only one really moved me. The ZZR1400. It's very nearly as usable as the Fazer, with bar risers it's just as comfortable, similar tank range and apart from BMW S1000RRs, not a lot can keep up with it.

It is different though. The Fazer is a hooligan machine, all revs and very chuckable, but the ZZR is cool and relaxed and it feels like a flagship product - very polished and up market. And with a bit of a reflash of the ECU will chuck 212bhp to 220bhp at the back wheel, depending on which dyno is used. Weird thing is, it does 50mpg at 95mph and the tyres last as long as a much less powerful bike (depending on make) so until the 26k service, it's as economical as a Fazer. And then at 26k miles you get the valves done and it's 800 quid....

Don't worry about the license thing though. Once you've got over the honeymoon period, it's a pussycat. You just kind of waft around rather than screaming it and you still blow everything into the weeds.

PM me if you want to know more or get onto the http://www.zx14r.co.uk forum. Which just like this one, very friendly and helpful.

And do keep the Fazer! At 28k it's only just run in...

Try them all but particularly the 1200RT.  I picked mine up in January and the size/weight seems to shrink as you get used to it.  The amusing this is now the FZS1000 feels like a 250 in  comparison. I love the contrast between these two bikes - and the RT can hussle!
