Replacing glass on FZ6 Mirror
« on: 06 November 2011, 06:04:17 pm »
Due to a stupid cock-up on my part, I've managed to shear off the right hand mirror stalk on my Fazer but, fortunately, didn't break the glass.

By luck, I've got a replacement complete mirror fitting but without glass in, so I need to get the glass from one to the other.

The problem is that the plastic housing that holds the glass has a lip to keep it in place and I can't see how to get the glass out without risking breaking it.

I'd thought of perhaps warming it on a radiator or in a bowl of hot water to soften the plastic, but I'm not sure if that would work.

Anybody got any helpful suggestions on how to sort this out?

If I remember correctly Ziggycol had a mk1 600 and mounted led indicators in the mirror shells...I think he put a thread up about it yonks ago...however the information may have made it into hot poop or hints and tips...I seem to recall ovens being mentioned but may be getting confused with Noojs custom tail lights...memory aint what it was lol

You missed a name out there ;)

Anyway, thought struck me, is the old one completely fubar-ed? If so, then a dremmel or similar, to go round the casing 5-10mm back from the glass might be the way forward. You'd only have to do the bit at the fattest end, the glass should slide out from the rest.

I've just done a search Hotpoop and on the old Yuku forums, but I've not found anything that seems to refer to this :(

I've thought about simply hack-sawing the glass out of the housing, but I'm keeping that as a last resort. Also, of course, there's still the matter of getting it into the replacement housing.

It would be so much easier if I could just undo the bolt that holds the housing on the stem and put it onto the other one, but, of course, the bolt is *behind*the glass! This does, of course, rather imply that there is a way of getting the glass into the housing after it's bolted to the stem, but I don't know how it's done.

Couple of things I'd try, first would be to get a watchmakers screwdriver or similar small, flat sharp thing and try to work it under the lip where it sits on the glass.
From playing with other mirrors it's been a push 'n pop style fitting that can be levered out carefully once you locate the wee moulded pin fitting things.

Other option is to head to a local glaziers and get them to cut and fit a piece of mirror for the spare one from any offcuts they have lying around, usually take pennies for doing it.

I just thought I'd update this in case anyone else finds this thread.

As the old mirror stalk was sheared off I decided it wasn't worth trying to preserve the housing, so I took a hacksaw to the widest part of of the housing to get the mirror glass out.

I then held the replacement housing (without glass) in front of an electric fan heater for a few minutes to soften the plastic and make it expand and then pushed the glass from the old one in, neat as you like :)

I then had to go and test if, of course, with a nice ride this afternoon :)
