Centre stand-beware corrosion!

Noticed it was harder to pull 600 onto stand than my thou. Noticed the stand feet were out of line and then saw metal of bridge piece was paper thin & holed!   The only evidence of winter use is on the front & underside of bike so looks like the combination of 10 British winters and road salt has triumphed. Will NOT be using stand until welded/replaced. So.... might be worth having a close look @ yours to avoid any disasters!

Ironic, I gave mine to the scrap man yesturday, didnt use it anyway! -save on weight use a paddock stand

Mine did the same as well, started getting more and more difficult to put on the centre stand, then i noticed the corrosion too.
Ended up winning a nearly new looking one on Ebay for something daft like £1, with about £8 delivery, i was well happy 
When i removed the old one i couldn't believe how twisted it had become!

the centre bridge piece has rotted out of mine completely, and I need to jump on it to get it to drop.

it's on my to do list 

I'm in the Bozboz camp of effective treatment for it

Mine was like this on my latest Fazer, ended up replacing it with the one from my previous bike

Update! I got the LHS nut & "collared" bolt out & springs off but RHS bolt seems to have welded itself to inside of stand pivot! Tried "persuasion" with lump hammer & steel drift also heat from blowlamp. Have given up & tied stand up --will visit local friendly engineer tomorrow am-as hes got even bigger hammer &  drift!   If its salvageable with welding which I doubt will keep it but the distortion means its prob scrap-in which case ebay it is!

Yep, the bridge between the 2 legs on my stand actually rusted through and snapped fairly recently.
Ended up with a big old clunking noise on the left side of the bike near my foot, thought something had broken off by the front sprocket - turns out it was just one leg of the stand dragging along the road!
Definitely one to watch out for

Update 2 :   Reason the one pivot bolt wouldn't come out was that someone had put a dab of weld against the 22mm nut. Dremel to the rescue! Stand is away being welded,&strengthened-what a piece of junk-what wont they do to save a few bob at the factory?

By coincidence,
                    my centre stand was looking a bit grot so had it off at weekend, stripped back to bare metal, 2 coats zinc primer & 3 coats of epoxy black, ready to go back on this weekend.
 
Interestingly, it seems to be metal dipped with zinc/nickle/tin or something, as nice & shiny where the rust hadn't already got,
 
Always worth an extra coat of paint on c.stand even if yours is still gleaming~ well placed to catch the worst of the road crud/stone chips etc.
 
Kinda glad i've done it now after reading this thread.
 
Ps lubeing your c.stand bolts is on the service schedule, so no excuse for skipping.

finally got round to taking mine off today.
Think I got there just in time, possibly the fact that my bikes so mucky and the stand was almost seized in the up position. is the only reason that it didn't separate on the bike.
You can see in the last pic, after the slightest of twists how much bright metal there is.
That was all that held the 2 bits together.

Update 3. Collected welded,strengthened & straightened stand & gave it good clean up & repaint. Back on the bike and instead of being" the weakest link" it is strong & easy to haul bike up onto now the feet are aligned properly-job done-sorted

Threads like this are appreciated, and save unfortunate incidents. Mine's coming off this weekend or next for a (preventative) sand and a paint. Did the exhaust down pipes last weekend.

Mines the same. Going to have it welded and repainted next week. Really tricky to get onto stand, it kinda twists as it takes the weight of the bike!
