First ride on my Fazer...
« on: 28 April 2013, 12:41:23 am »
Just got back from my first proper ride on the Fazer, not been out for a decent ride for nearly 4 years (not had a bike for 3 years after selling my CBR600rr due to not riding it). We went up to the lakes, was out about 5 hours in total.

Thoughts are it's really comfy, smooth, nice power delivery, handles pretty well and gives you confidence. Obviously it's not a patch on the CBR's handling but it's still very good for what it is.

Bad points, the tank is tiny!! When my fuel light came on (30 miles from the nearest station) I thought the bike must have something wrong with it, rolled into the petrol station on fumes and filled it up, then worked out it had done just short of 50mpg, which is impressive. Just the range is poor, especially when used at night like I often will as petrol stations are mostly closed.

Talking about night riding, the lights are poor, so very very poor. I did the light mod today before going out and it's still terrible. Going to try some brighter bulbs though, hopefully that will help.

But apart from that I love it, I can't believe you can get such a good bike for so little money. I'm doing the national road rally in July, really looking forward to taking the Fazer on it, will try and get a few more rides in before then too.

Glad you enjoyed it mate! They are great bikes. Can't wait to get back out on mine, haven't been on it since October last year!

What tank range were you expecting? I usually get 200+ miles from a full tank and 190 to 210 seems to be the general average per tank for most people.

Chris

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

You would of course have to calculate mpg for your own bike since 1st incarnation had an 18Litre tank, later ones 20L & Foxeye(02-03) increased to 22Litre which incidentally is the same as my Gen 1 FZS 1000.Very pleased with range on my 03 600 :lol

Why have you not been on the bike since October?

I done 125 miles on mine yesterday in total going to the road racing.
I was happy enough on the way there, but by the time i got back my arse cheeks were in agony. :moon
100 miles constant on my bike is about my limit because of the seat, but others dont seem to  complain of this.
Mine is a 98, are these less comfortable than the 2000 onwards because of the less padding in the seat?

Why have you not been on the bike since October?

Mainly because It's not had wheels on it, had them powder coated, then got carried away with cleaning, taking bits off and painting them etc. then there's also the weather, the bike is just a toy for me not used for transport.

Jenice i have to agree about the handleing as compared to the gladius the fazer is a cumbersome ride but thats the difference between technology. But I prefer my 03 fazer on long hauls as I do not get wind blasted to hell and back that tires me out in comparision and I prefere the the smooth mid range and lack of power band.

I is getting anything between 200 to 240 to the tank on my 03 that averages out to around 53mpg. As to my seat I can on average do 100miles befor I need a rest but thats due to old war wounds playing up and a spinal injury. I find with the summer months I change to my kevlar jeans that make a big difference in comfort and alows me to go further usualy.

Get some Hagon front springs and a Hagon rear shock, and the handling will be transformed  :)

My old '99 was very uncomfortable. Managed to do about 60-70 miles before I had to get off. Did a trip from Bristol to Chelmsford on it - had to stop at every single services on the M4 and M25 :P

My '01 however is fantastic. Did 300~ miles yesterday and only just began to get a bit uncomfortable at the end :D

I have a 98 fazer; I find on long drives it does about 190 miles before the fuel light comes on. As for the bad lights I too did the head light conversion made a bit better as I do some night driving, but the best thing that I did was removing the cone on the headlamp as the rattling was getting bad, the lights are fairly good now. As for distance on a tank of fuel, a friend of mine has a honda hornet and he has to fill it every 100 miles.

It seems people get much better fuel economy than me :( I ran out of fuel the other day at 191.6 miles on the tank, this is all commuting but I et about 44mpg:

Lots of stop start traffic can bring fuel economy right down.

Other things like sticky brakes, poor fuel quality, hard acceleration/running at high revs, spark plugs needing gapped/renewed, lack of servicing (especially oil changes), weather (hot/cold) etc can all have a huge effect on fuel economy too.

I dread to think what my fuel economy was yesterday.  I was far too enthusiastic.  Too many foc'cers, too many bikes, too much awesome.
Opinions are like A**holes, Everyone has one.  Some people seem to have more than one though which is a bit odd.

My MPG easily drops by like 10% whenever I go out on the London Foccer rides :P But I can easily justify the extra cost with the extra fun ^^

I was wondering if the extra padding was just for the passenger or the whole seat on the year 2000 onwards fzs 600.
I can do far more miles on my GSXR 750 without arse pain, and thats not exactly built for comfort.

I filled up yesterday having done only the brum meet and the subsequent ride out and was surprised that fuelly only reported a drop in mpg of 3.  I was stunned.

IT gives me more faith in calculating my range based on my mpg  rather than fuel tank
