Tyre pressure indicator caps
« on: 03 April 2013, 05:54:40 pm »
Are these safe to use? Because of the way they work if one fails could cause the tyre to deflate, is that correct???

I'm talking about screw on caps that show green for correct tyre pressure and red or yellow if tyre loses pressure.

Somebody on here had just that failure... Not for me, I'll stick with the regular checks with a pen gauge!

Unless it gets an impact it shouldn't leak, I used them for a couple of years without issue.
That was untill I did a track day and 4th session the extra weight of the cap sheared the valve stem and dumped all the air from the stem.
So the cap itself I would say is fine but the extra weight it adds to your stem at speed and Gforce in corners could be a problem.

Just my experience and opinion but I will never use one again.

I looked at these, but as ghostbiker suggests, they can put a lot of strain on the valve.

I use a simple tyre pressure gauge, about half the length of a biro and about the same diameter which sits in my right hand jacket pocket so it's always available for use.

I would strongly advise not to use them but if you do get some solid valves fitted. I will try and find the picture of what happened to mine at 3 figure speeds. :eek  As you can see it just ripped straight out of the valve body.

Another issue I've seen on these is where the extended and heavier pressure reading caps has bent the valves causing them to leak......

Thanks guys have now removed them! I don't go at 3 figure speeds but the thought of one doing a "funny " at 80 MPH or 90MPH doesn't bear thinking about!

Also bit worried about if one breaks and all air comes out.

Yeah I was lucky, it happened on the track just before a bend. So had a lovely big gravel trap to use. On road it could have been a diff story.
