givi (or similar) top box - fittings needed ?
« on: 15 August 2012, 11:37:01 pm »
i have never fitted any luggage to a bike before.
i'm thinking of getting a monokey givi top box to carry my cornet in to go to band practice on my bike and i have no idea what i need to fit it.
it won't be until the start of next month (no cash left this month!) but would like to get prepared if i can (mentally at least!) for fitting one.
thanks :)

First off, you'll need the Monokey rack kit; these are bike specific (IIRC the rack for the FZ6 is around £100, I should think the FZS will be similar in price).

You'll need a box to match it - the bigger you go, the dearer they tend to be; make sure you have one big enough for what your carrying (Mine is 45 litre). Beware also, that volume isn't the only factor - awkward shaped luggage can be a ball-ache.

FWIW, I paid £35 fitting charge for mine from the dealer I bought the bike from - for that kind of money it's probably as well to let someone else scrape their knuckles fitting it.

have you thought of getting a normal rennatech(or however its spelt!) rack and getting a standard topbox, you could look at your local shops for topbox to see if they are big enough for what your putting inside,iv just done similar on my fzs6 but only small box that hold helmet and waterproofs

Got my rack and plate from http://www.motorcycleplanet.co.uk and box off Ebay, I would have bought the rack off Ebay but they didn't seem to be selling much cheaper.

Givi rack fitting for Fazers is straight forward until you get to the 04's with the underseat exhausts, then it gets a bit more complicated. Note that they do two different types of plates - monorack and monokey. Make sure you get the monokey plate as this is the one for the larger boxes. The boxes themselves go up to 55litre (E55). I've just bought one of these as my last one perished in a crash :\  and the cheapest price I could find was £195 delivered.

Givi monorack:

You can also get a Kappa. Similar quality to Givi, but quite cheaper. I'm happy with my Kappa 50 litre topcase. It is on a Givi rack (they are 100% compatible), the rack came with the bike (2nd hand).

Plastic is good. It can stand bumpy roads, fast riding, heavy load. Only problem with Kappa is a bit less quality finish - but I'm happy with mine. Of course, if you can afford a Givi...

Both are ridiculous amounts of money for plastic containers, but I can't make one myself so... :(

Like other foccers said: get a monoKEY system, it is better and all the big boxes are monokey.
