Clunking noise when off throttle
« on: 22 July 2012, 08:51:16 pm »
Hi this is my first post so hello! Got my bike About a week ago and had my rear tyre replaced on Friday, I seem to be getting a slight clunking noise and slight feeling through the left peg when off the power and slowing down. It seems to go away when accelerating or maybe I just can feel it any ideas what it could be??

New rear tyre - is your back wheel properly aligned and your chain tensioned properly? Did it happen before the tyre replacement, or only after? Is everything tightened properly?

Chain feels ok I think  il need to measure the distance at each end of the swing arm to make sure the wheels in line. I never noticed the noise before until my tyre was replaced

How strange, i was talking about this earlier today, as mine has started doing it very slightly too within the last week.

My wheel is dead straight, equally aligned, and the DID X Ring chain cleaned, well lubed and looked after with correct tension, and done about 10,000 miles now, so i'm a bit miffed that i've got this very slight thud in my left foot as previous experience means new chain and sprockets? I've had the new 12mm sprocket nut put on the front as well when it was all changed.

Surely they should last longer than that, bearing in mind it's my work transport, and not really abused at all?  :rolleyes

sounds like a tight spot in the chain

Think a good clean and lube should solve the problem?

I gave my chain a thorough clean today and lubed it all up again before, and then again after a ride, it was a bit better but i could still feel a niggling bump!

If yours was okay before your tyre was changed then there's a good chance it may be an alignment issue, but i'd give it a good clean anyway if it looks like it needs it.

Mine looked like new after i'd finished with it.

I tend to only use Wurth High Performance chain lube now, i've tried others but they tended to just fling off whereas this stuff stays on very well with minimum mess.

I actually noticed this today too!  Gave the chain a good clean and oiled it when i got home and took the front sprocket cover off too to have a look, but couldnt see anything wrong.  The chain did seem a bit loose though so tightened it.

I s'pose the consistently shite weather can't be totally ruled out for displacing the lube from the chain!!!

can't hurt but if there's a tight spot then probably not. you can free a tight spot using two pliers by twisting the stiff link back and forth until it frees up but its a bit of a bodge and a lot of people just replace the chain if they find a tight spot because of the risk of it snapping. if i was you i'd inspect all of the links individually and check to see if they all rotate nice and freely.

I assume the tyre fitter removed the wheel and not yourself?... Is it not worth a trip back to them explaining the bike now clunks and didnt before?

I gave my chain a proper inspection today and i have one link that's tightened up.
I've given it a bit of a work over with pliers and plenty of oil to try and loosen it up but i don't think it's gonna help too much!  :'(

I tightened my chain and gave it a good lube, went up today to the Armoy road race about 70 miles away and didnt notice any vibration from the left peg.

Keep the chain sounding sweet and there'll be no issues, when it starts talking to you, you know you've got problems...... :lol

The bike will run like a tractor if it's letting air in the carb rubber, i found out the hard way when a mechanic had done some work on my bike and managed to fold the edge of the 2nd carb rubber inside itself when refitting it.

Took it back saying every time i went to overtake it would stutter but they refused to acknowledge a problem!

Ended up having all the carbs cleaned out and stripped down at another place then the mechanic walked in to show me the problem, i wasn't impressed!  :eek
