Alarm wiring loom

Hi, i am planning to wire up the power for my satnav and luckily there is a ignition switch wire under the seat for the alarm circuit. my question is does anyone know how much load would be safe to put across it?

The satnav is only 1 amp max but the last thing i want to do is burn something out.
my other plan was to just be on the safe side and fit a relay.

I also plan to fit an alarm shortly so i guess that would be extra load on it.

what year is your bike? if it's a lights on model then take a feed off the sidelights........simples!
remember shorter wires=less ohms. i thing that a relay for a 5v draw is a touch excessive.

Its a 51 plate fazer so sidelights come on when you turn them on. the satnav is a garmin zumo 220 so the supplied transformer is 12 volt so need to hook that up.
my thinking was that the relay setup allows me to hook more things up in the future. such as a power socket to charge my phone etc.

my twat nav and 12v accessory socket both run off the side light feed with no need for relay. the sat nav is a 5v system (with a circuit to drop the voltage in the mount usually) and most phones are 3.7v. as long as you dont try to run heated clothing or a ciggie lighter off it you'll be fine. i fitted leds for my side lights as well which means that the current draw with all accessories (8w) going is actually less than 2 sidelights (10w).

annoyingly the transformer is in-line on the zumo 220 and according to the instructions needs to be kept in a dry place.. so under the seat it is. the rest of the cable goes along the bike and then into the mount. no electronics in the mount at all on that model.



The up shot is most of the wiring is in place for my alarm when i arrives and i have a 40amp relay for future ad-dons.
