Buying advice for an FZS600

Hello all,

I am here for a bit of advice,
 
I am a relatively new Motorcycle rider been driving for about a year and I am looking to get a bigger bike.

From reading around and seeing whats available here in Ireland it has become clear that a 600cc Fazer is the way to go.

I have my eye on a 2002 registered FZS600 with 12,000 miles on the clock being advertised for €2,200.

Info in the ad:
Has been garaged for the last 7 years,
New battery,
New oil and filter,
New air filter,
New Fuel filter,
Full alarm with remote,
Two keys and
Handbook

Just wondering when I to go and look at it what would be the things to look out for to make sure it was kept well and is still in good condition.

Where in Ireland are You?
You would really need to take someone knowledgeable on bikes with you.
Saw the add in Adverts.ie, from the pictures is have been down the road at some stage. It is unlikely it would have to many issues if the mileage is genuine.However from lack of use it may have carburetor issues and not run cleanly at low revs.
Since you are coming from a 125 you may not notice any issues as it will have much more power even if running badly.You will need to know why it has been garaged for so long.
This is the older boxeye model and will need the headlights modified to improve them, but it is a relatively easy thing to do.

Check the age of the tyres too, not used for 7 years they may have a flat spot and become cracked/unusable. Check inside the fuel tank for rust and corrosion, water may have settled at the bottom of the tank and the fuel may have gone off. The fork oil will likely have deteriorated so factor in an oil change. Wipe the sliders clean and dry, then bounce the front up and down, then check to see if theres any oil on the sliders. If there is, the seals have gone. Have a good look at the brake lines, flex them to see if theres any cracks cos theyre old.

If youre unsure, then as above, take someone with you

Check the front sprocket to see if it's held in place on the output shaft by a nut or a weld.

Just a note Shaz - that bike is what is known as a "box eye" Fazer, which means that it was made before 2002 and was either sold after being on the shop floor for a couple of years, or there may be something in the bikes history that you haven't yet discovered - although there's obvious signs of crash damage to the exhaust and right side engine casing.


Either way, £2,000 approx for a (pre 2002) box eye is more than I'd want to pay, especially with crash damage.

Not a bad looking bike, if the mileage is genuine. The price is a bit on the high side. The tyres and possibly the brake hoses will want replacing.
As said, best if someone with experience can take it for a ride and see how she handles. They're great bikes the box eyes you won't be dissapointed. Worth a punt, see if you can bat the price down tho.
