When it's time to change a slipping  clutch do you change just the friction plates or must the steel plates be changed as well?

Friction plates should be all you need. Hard to beat the OEM ones, but they are expensive

I've managed to get hold of number 4 and 5 plates (on fowlers diagram)   short of 6 and 7   which are dirt cheap in usa but mortgageable delivery lol   and in uk mortgageable price as well :(

You posted in 1000 section but I see you’ve got a FZS 600 if that’s the case I’ve got a full set of plates ( friction and metal) used but ok, they’ve been sat around for a while but if you’re interested and it helps you out send me a PM if you want them I’ll sort you them out just pay the postage it’ll free up some space in my shed,
I’ve also got a complete clutch for a 1000 gen 1 going cheap
