University open days

The eldest son is nearly half way through his A levels now and is now contemplating which Uni's he would like to attend to study Marine Biology and/or Oceanography. It seems the better ones at the moment are
Plymouth - feccin midweek open day and only 250 miles from home
Portsmouth - another midweek open day but only 60 miles from home
Southampton - Friday open day
Bangor (I know it is in feccin Wales!) 300 miles from home.
 
Trouble with all of these is they are all within a 2 week period with Southampton and Bangor on consecutive bloody days. Looks like my car (and credit card) are going to get a bashing in early July then. Just hope the start/finish times each day are not too early/late. The journeys themselves I dont mind, the longest trek is about 300 miles (about 1200 in total) but I would like to get some sleep as I still have to work on the other days

Not such a silly idea, I have three at Uni and at the age your son is they want to be free from home far away from Mum  and Dad. They struggle to understand just how far they want to go, if anything happens to them you want the quickest route to them as possible. If he takes the train to these places maybe having to get up in the early hours and wait on station between connections it will come home to him.


But the most important thing is they go to where the best education is for them.

The idea of these open days is to let him see the Uni and work out if it is the one he wants to go to. He wants someone to go with him to the open day. I think his favoured one at the moment is Southampton but the others (paticularly Bangor and Plymouth) have very good reputations in the area he wants to study too.

Needs to keep his options open too. He may hate Wales when he goes there but at least he will have the choice.

Think Hull Uni has a research centre at the Deep (big fishtank/aquarium) and they're currently building an extention to the biology dept. Cheap to live in Hull as well.

Narrow it down a bit.
I went to Plymouth and studied within that faculty and would recommend Plymouth.
The sea one side and Dartmoor the other. Good nights out. Main line trains.
Great place.

You forgot the bi-yearly tradition of turning the family car into a moving wagon when you shift his stuff from uni to home in July then back again in September.

Bob...Pompey..As I think I may be looking after a very large diving tank in the new job..Dawn's uncle does student housing ....and of course the young man is more than welcome to pop by for some grub etc...Oh and a reason to get the bloody bikes out!

That is the preference for me for those reasons Mr mac. Southampton or Plymouth are his favourites based on reputation and diving in the course (in that order). Wales is a distant 4th but on there because it is rated for the course.
