Slow starting.
« on: 30 October 2016, 01:45:14 pm »
Hi all,

My fazer is slow to start first thing or when it has been stood, it actual sounds as though one cylinder starts to fire then the others gradually kick in untill finally it ticks it over.

I have changed the spark plugs and the usual service its but i am not sure where else to look.

Cheers

Stu

Always got to start with the battery, have you tried giving it a charge?
Any idea how old it might be?

what sort of condition is it in? how many miles on it? how long are you leaving it between starts? what service work have you done? did this problem happen all of a sudden or has it been like that for a while? it could be a whole host of things you can either try and diagnose it by gathering some evidence or you can just do service work and say to yourself it probably needed it anyway. a few stab in the dark possibilities are weak battery, carbs need a clean, air filter, plugs, plug caps, plug wires, choke not working correctly, maybe water in the fuel. the colder weather has a way of killing weak batteries is it cranking slower? a bit more info is needed

Agrees  about the watker in the fuel, I remember years ago my BSA Super Rocket ran fine most of the time but on really cold mornings it refused to start, It turned out to be a bead or two of condensation in the fuel lines to the carbs used to freeze in the filter in the banjo union on the Amal Monoblock carbs and stop the fuel flowing, as soon as the temperature lifted a few degrees all was well she would fire up no problem.

If you're considering the chance of water in the fuel, put 300ml of pure alcohol in a full fuel tank, and it will bind with any moisture and burn it off in running.
Make sure you buy the 99% version, as they also do a 70% alcohol/30% water version for cleaning stuff with, which obviously defeats the object.
I've been using it for years andit won't affect running in any way, other than improve what's in your tank.

Personally, my money's still on the battery being iffy, but it doesn't hurt doing this as well anyway, i normally buy 5 litres at a time as it won't go off because it's alcohol..

Ok, well the bike is well past 70K now, I generally do the normal service items such as plugs air filter, oil and any extra bits it requires.

The bike is pretty much on the road every day as I use it to do a 60mile round trip commute, the only thing that makes me take it off the road is snow, the slow starting has been going for sometime now.

I am thinking it might be the battery after the comments as I have had the bike since 2008 with only 9K on the clocks and I know I have had a couple of times where the battery has gone dead so as far as I am concerned it is still on its original battery.

Oh and I use pro FST in my fuel to clean the carbs out once or twice a year and never had a problem with it.

If it's the original battery it's a miracle that it's lasted this long! I'd replace it. Most likely it'll sort you're problem.

Would rate STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner way above Silkolene Pro FST any day.
