Fork oil balls up?
« on: 26 August 2015, 07:28:32 pm »
While I had the forks off to remove a snapped exhaust stud I thought it wise to change my fork oil with 15w. Like the numpty I am, I used the boxeye level instead of the foxeye.
It's nice and firm, maybe too firm. Should I remove the excess oil? I'm afraid I might lose the front end cos its not compliant enough.

As in the '98/'99 level?

'00/'01 box eye levels are the same as a fox eye.

The early models don't have the adjusters, so you simply have too much in there!

Apart from being maybe too firm, I'm not quite sure what harm it would do if you left it, but I s'pose the levels have been worked out for a reason!

I wouldnt have thought youd just lose it like that.......id be careful because there has been a change so gradually build up and get used to the new characteristics......do the cable tie thingy to guage how much the forks are moving.

P.s....well done for spelling "lose" correctly......you wont loose by that fact alone :D

So by my calculations I need to extract 12.5ml of oil from each leg. Think a syringe will do the job nicely and save me taking the whole lot apart again.

In theory yes, although it's more important to make sure the air gap is the same both sides.
I put equal measured amounts in each fork and they didn't level up???
Dunno if there was trapped oil still in there, never did quite figure it out, but I just levelled the oil so the gap was right in each fork and it worked out fine.

I did the air gap method as I wasn't doing the bushes and thought there might still be some old oil in there. Both legs were spot on 121mm gap so taking equal amounts out each one should work fine. The old oil was red and crystal clear which is a good sign. The new stuff is blue so it should make the bike that wee bit faster. ::)
