rear axle nut and pivot bolt grease?
« on: 25 June 2015, 12:25:50 pm »
Hello,

what grease and where do you grease when assemble rear axle?

Do you reckon I should use copper like this one or white like RG2 grease?

And where do you grease? I mean the whole pivot bolt without the threads, the two axle spacers all over them, both sides of the washer and internal side of the axle nut?

When I grease the nut side and than tighten some grease may go on the threads?

I am confused because some sources actuallty recomend greasing the threads including nuts.

Some of them say to use copper some white grease?

As copper grease neither runs nor gets washed off very easily, it is ideal for coating screw threads and adjusters to form a non-corrosive barrier.

I normally spread a layer along the axel bolt (not on the threaded part) and feed it (the bolt) through the rest. You don't want grease on the thread end (washer and nut included) when assembled.

First link goes to red rubber grease which is used more on your brake calipers.
You want a heavy Multi purpose grease, but not copper.

What about the collars (spacers) that go on the top of bearing seals? Do you grease them thoroughly?

no. They will get enough off the spindle as you insert it.
The bearing face that the spacer touches is not meant to turn, the other side does that.

Pretty sure I use a lithium based general grease for the rear axle

I rarely use Copper Grease on anything that moves - it's usually just for anti-seizing / rust protection though it does have a good high-temperature tolerance

Copper ease is an anti-seize compound.
If you use it on moving parts it will act like a grinding paste.

You want a general purpose lithium grease - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002E2QM6S/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B002SQAOJG&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1VXP08GGYMXWKW18GCFD

As darrsi says red rubber grease is for use on yer brakes.
