Howdy All....little bit of help required please :-)
« on: 23 May 2015, 02:54:23 pm »
Hi All,

I've just bought an X plate 2000 FZS 600 as a second bike / something for Mrs P to ride after she does her test and it won't start with the side stand down.

Its fine on the centre stand or if you just hold it up and start it. If its running whilst on the centre stand or you are holding it and you put the side stand down it instantly cuts out (all of this is while it is in neutral of course).

Because it starts on the centre stand I assumed that the clutch microswitch is ok and also the starter and relay etc so decided the sidestand switch must be shot as the plunger was a bit sticky and WD40 seemed to make no difference - so off to fleabay for a replacement (2nd hand)switch - just fitted it and absolutely no different.
I'm assuming that there is some sort of interlock or something somewhere - the net seems to have loads of people with the same problem but no real answer (that I can find).

The bike looks like it had an alarm fitted at some stage but its been removed, but some of the loom is still left in place.

It isn't a huge problem at the moment, just annoying, but would like to sort it before Mrs P uses it as she is a bit short in the leg and the side stand will be easier for her to use.

Any help or suggestions greatly received....

Does it start when it's in gear with the clutch in? if it doesn't  maybe it thinks it is in gear so it would be the neutral switch or whatever at fault, I think theres a fault finding chart in the service manual in the downloads section, if you can follow a diagram?

There is no switch or electrical connections to the centre stand so you can forget that.
The side stand switch is working, as was the one you replaced, because it stops the engine when you put the stand down. However that should only happen when in gear and not when in neutral.
I agree with chaz that it could be the neutral switch at fault. Does the green neutral light come on when in neutral? Because that gets it's signal from the same switch.

How do you know this?

If your talking about the wires and connectors under the seat, it's a Yamaha plug and play alarm, but one of the connections under the seat does need a 'loop' wire back into itself, if that's missing, that could be your problem?

It does start in gear with the clutch in and the neutral light comes on and off as it goes in and out of gear - I did have that thought myself.
It doesn't look like a standard alarm loom as it's been spliced and not part of the orginal loom - off to find the fault  finding charts.
Thanks for the reply to date.
