To usd or not to usd
« on: 21 February 2015, 06:05:48 pm »
Hello foccers I want to upgrade my 1999 fzs 600 front end. I found kebab 19's link to falcon 269's r1 conversion
And thought it was awesome decided to go for it, found a set of 5jjs and yokes made an offer
While waiting for a response found another thread on r6 5sl's this seems to be a really good upgrade also but
The thread got a bit tech for me but it sounds like the 5sl's are morealess a bolt on upgrade can anyone
Confirm this for me ?  Offer was then accepted on the r1 5jj's but now im not sure which to opt for

If anyone has pics of usd's one there early fazer would grateful to see them or if anyone has an opinion on this
Would love to hear it.

Btw my riding is purely Sunday morning blasts through the summer months and ocasionaly to work
So the question I spose is do I need usd's ?are they better?

Any advise would be great cheers
Sorry for the long winded post :lol

Hello Tommy,
I did Falcon's R1 fork conversion on my old 1000
I also did the 5SL fork conversion on my old 1000 & more recently I did a 5EB fork conversion for our 600s:
http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,15854.0.html
Please note that NONE of these conversions will be a straight bolt-on swap - indeed, you will need different yokes & a replacement front wheel for all of them.

You don't need USDs but they do look well.  They will be a lot of hassle and £400+ tho!
Picture of Boxeye with R1 4XV forks (can't remember who's bike it was but they weren't on the forum for long):

Fair enough, welcome to the alternative fork club  :)
For the most part, you'll need to follow Falcon's guide as the Fazer 600 & 1000 steering stems are identical.
£200 for both yokes & forks is probably the going rate, with possibly another £150 for an R1/R6/XJR front wheel complete with discs and tyre.
To be honest, nearly all the grief will with the yokes - stem swap, lock-stop adjustment, top-hat spacers and strengthening the underside of the top yoke to take risers.
Oh, and make sure you use Muddybuddy's speedo sensor idea if you want to retain the standard Fazer clocks, otherwise it'll have to be a Koso dash or similar.

Well thanks again kebab forks and yokes are ordered including standard fazer lower and stem
Only ever done simple stuff on my bike but I am a car mechanic so should be able to get my head round it

Couple more q's mate if I'm changing the front wheel then gonna wanna up the rear to match
What options are available to me? considering I wanna do the r6 rear shock also
For the r6 shock is only the dog bones and spring that need changing ?

Will add bike pics and progress reports as I go for other members interested in these mods
Thanks again

Good stuff, most of it isn't too difficult. I think I might have an old R1 'top-hat' spacer from my old build which could be liberated for a bottle of wine  ;)

Regarding the rear wheel, this recent topic should help:
http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,15828.0.html
So it looks like the old FZR1000 with it's 5.5 inch rim might be a suitable candidate (with some machining)

The R6 shock needs a bit more than dogbones & spring.  The standard spring is a weirdo 6.5 inches long and aftermarket springs only come in 6 or 7 inch variants. So a half-inch spacer is needed to take up the slack and make it suitable for Fazers.  Also, the R6 shock's top mounting hole is 10mm diameter and not the 12mm of the Fazer.  So you either need to drill the R6's top mount out to 12mm or insert two top-hat spacers in the frame's top mount area and use a 10mm diameter bolt to make it fit.  Which is why I sell R6 shock 'kits'  :lol

That's great news just need to know details for bottle of wine ;)

Meantime forks and yokes all arrived today ,will check em out properly at the weekend as pressed for time this week, ain't we all?

Been promising swmbo new car for a while, she only found the one today
So toy money gone  :'(

Means I'm gonna concentrate on fork conversion only for the minute
Probably not a bad idea as I'm new bike mods , walk before I can run and that

Was pondering fazer stem to r1 yoke attachment and thought about maybe having a stem made
With r1 bottom and fazer top I know a guy capable of doing it was wondering if you had looked into that already?
And what your thoughts are?
