Anyone do Volunteering?
« on: 16 May 2014, 12:22:32 pm »
I'm off for an interview (don't want to put the mockers on it by saying which job just yet so please bear with me) that sees me having to sign up as a volunteer. Been told there's one member of the interview panel is BIG on the role of the volunteer as opposed to anything else I can bring to the role,
so.........................has any one got any advice they can give me through experience etc. as to what to say ref volunteers/volunteering?
thanks in advance

I used to spend a lot of evenings in the volunteers as it was one of the few pubs that would serve me when I was 15?

Personally I see working for free as bad personal management.  But then I understand that lots of sectors expect it.  Certainly have come across a number of interns / work experience folk in the media industry, in teh police they have the specials route in.  I'd say it depends on industry sector.

I'm a Parish Councillor which I took up as it looked like i was going to be made redundant and voluntary work looks good on your CV.
Employers like nowadays as it shows an interest outside of work, what you give back to the community, sets you apart etc.
Don't forget being a blood biker is voluntary so it counts.

thanks for the replies lads but not exactly the answers I was looking for :b
I appreciate peeps thoughts on volunteers and there is a VOLUNTEERS by me that serves great ale too :lol  but I need specific info for interview as one of the panel members is the volunteer coordinator and thinks volunteers are the biz. I need to impress this person more than any others on the panel
the job involves riding a motorbike is all I'll say

So what are you asking? If you don't do any voluntary work its academic any way because you don't do any, unless you lie in your interview!

I volunteer for Northumbria Blood Bikes. I thought since I give blood and I might need some in a hurry some time that I would put something back and add biking in the mix. The added bonus of riding a full liveried pan or fjr with optional blue lights helps too.
I have found the fundraising aspect quite fun, bag packing and manning a stand at shows and shop entrances. Meeting all sorts of interesting people, spreading the word, showing bikers in a good light. Very worth while.

I'm a bit unsure if you're asking about people volunteering in a organisation with that being a route to a paid job or if you mean someone on the interview panel is keen on people doing voluntary work outside of work.

I personally prefer to keep the two things separate. I know people that work for charities and sometimes I'm unsure if things they are doing is covered by their paid role or if it's on top. I like keeping the clear distinction.
