Back wheel not spinning freely
« on: 02 February 2014, 10:10:49 pm »
Hi guys,

Very first post on this forum - hope you can give me some advise!

I've had my FZ6 06 just for few months. I've noticed a bit weird behavior of the real wheel. It wouldn't spin freely on neutral on central stand, so you can spin it with hand, but it won't continue spinning.
Then if I put this in 1st gear on center stand, it will continue spinning even with disengaged clutch. If I switch to neutral it very soon comes to hault, but if I change to the second gear, it would only spin when the clutch is engaged - as soon as I disengage the clutch, the wheel quickly comes to hault.

I was wondering if:
a) This is normal?
b) If not, where should I look for a problem? Initial thoughts are to get the brake caliper of and see if the wheel would spin freely then - any other thoughts?
c) Can this also cause a bit of weird handling - e.g. difficulty controlling the bike on an uneven road?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

The wheel spinning in first gear but not I'm second is normal.

Personally I would just double check your rear wheel is square, your chain tension is correct, and your rear wheel spindle is properly torqued.

If the wheel is off square, this could go some way to explaining your handling issues as well (depending what exactly it is doing).

Double checking those three things is s good starter for ten though.

Oh, and welcome to the forum :)

Oh, and take your bike for a little spin then see if your rear disk gets extremely hot. This would point to a sticking caliper piston (s).

the rear wheel won't spin if in neutral because of the drag on the chain, as mick said check the brake isn't binding, you can usually hear it if you turn the wheel by hand and apply the brake on and off a few times.

p.s. NEVER clean the chain with the engine running and in gear, I know  it quicker but go on youtube and see the results???????????

Thanks, guys!

Took the bike for a spin, checked the disc afterwards - really cold :) So I guess there is no drag on the brake.
As for the handling, I actually tried changing suspensions preload from 4 to 6 and became so much better. I may change it down a bit to 5, but looks like that is the reason for funny handling.

Thanks again for your help!
