Earth points
« on: 09 December 2013, 04:30:13 pm »
Hello everyone,

Haven't posted on here for a while; now that the bike is away for the winter I am trying to sort an electrical problem which is that the speedo is not working and the rev gauge dies when you go above 10,000 RPM, if I turn the ignition off and immediately back on whilst riding it solves the rev problem however the speedo is consistently not working. All of this has resulted in the head unit fuse actually melting two times.

I found the previous owner fitted a make shift wire connecting both front lights which is a bit suspicious and think this may be related to the current problem.
All other electricals work perfectly fine as far as I am aware.
Can anyone tell me where the earth points are please? I have checked the main one running from the battery down to the engine.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would much rather sort it myself than ask a garage to do so!!

Many thanks!!!

Will

Connecting up both headlights is standard on the mk1 but it may have been done badly, but easy enough for you to see if there's a bad connection.
As for the speedo- as it's digital first thing to check is the entire length of the cable from clocks to wheel, it's easy for them to get caught and wear through anywhere near the wheel, or the speedo drive itself has smashed itself in the wheel (originals are ceramic and break easily) simple enough to have the wheel off!
Some say...

There are sensible and stupid ways of modifying the headlights.
Done correctly the dip filament on the right goes off when the high beam filament is lit. If the feed for the dip filament is taken directly from the H1 on the left it means both the H4 filaments are lit when you select high beam. This overloads the wiring and fuse and the extra heat cooks the coating off the reflector.
Look under "Articles"/"FZS600" to find the thread describing the correct way to get dipped beam from the H4 bulb.

The rev counter issue is a new one on me. As a starting point I'd check all the connectors in the black box under the tank. Make sure all are clean and the contacts tight. In particular look for any that have green corrosion or signs of overheating. Also check the connector on the back of the instrument panel.
