The extra bits on insurance--worth it?
« on: 05 November 2013, 02:49:04 pm »
Just got a quote with bennets and to add legal cover its  £29.99 - this is somthing that I have always had on my insurances anyway
I can also add
Helmet and Leathers for £48
Personel injury for £34.99 (biker personal accident cover)
And rac EU for £90
Meaning if I had all 4 items it would be an extra £202.98
BUT they do a package that if you have them all then its only an extra £55 total and as I am already paying the £29.99 legal cover I will only be paying a total extra £25.
But I dont need the RAC because I have AA cover with my car.

So am I stupid for even having to think about it and should be snapping there hand off
Or is none of the extras ever worth having any way
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

Must admit those extras seem priced a bit high, probably so you jump on the chance at paying the £55, anything to get more money from you.

I just renewed with bikesure, equity red star, legal cover included and additional personal injury was £15. There the only 2 I bother with really.

Got to weigh up if it's worth it for you. In particular, the leathers and personal injury cover, have a good read and satisfy yourself that you will get paid out what you expect to.
The legal cover you can get for free on the web -here's one - http://www.yourkey.info/tag/legal-cover  if you read the small print of the paid for legal cover it says the same as the free one that they will only pursue a claim if they think they will win! that's why I stopped paying for it :)

In respect of legal cover with Bennets, I was initially quoted the same £30. But here's the interesting bit, when I decided not at that price and removed it from the quote and proceeded to next step, it popped up and said "OK, how's about at £15?". Cheeky, no? So if it's something you want maybe you can save some dosh the same way? As for if it's worth it, I'm never sure.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.
I told my current insurance brokers about bennets and they are now throwing in the leagal cover and can do the helmet and leathers and personal injury for £35 for the 2. I dont even know if im bothered about leathers and helmet.
Just want to get some views from others on the merits of that and the personal injury extra cover.

I've tended to drop 'legal cover' and 'personal injury' cover in the last few years. On the basis that we motorcyclists tend to come off worse, and it's usually somebody else's fault, I've found that ambulance chasing solicitors will beat a path to my door, without any extra cover  :eek

Check wether the personal accident cover will pay out for your circumstances- it won't cover me as I'm a courier, yet every renewal they'll try and sell it to me, until I have to point out 'its courier insurance' your accident cover won't cover me!

I went with all the extras for a while as it wasn't much more than std TPFT for me.  However I just re insured and kept it bare bones.

Helmet and clothing cover is pretty pointless as mine is worthless (12 year old Hein Gerike kit that leaks, helmet is probably 7 years old and I'd replace it if I could justify the expense)

Breakdown: Covered with AA as a family in any vehicle so not needed (this year). This is the one thing I would always have though as gettign towed to a garage has happened for me about 5 times in 12 years.  4 of those were punctures.  Once I have plugged a puncture with the 'tip-top' kit, it isn't the easiest thing, the first attempt broke the tool, the second broke the plug, the third worked but the plug wasn't in quite right.

Legal cover: If you have a case then you will reclaim costs from the other party anyway (or no win no fee), plus I get legal cover with house insurance (which includes two free wills too)

Fully comp?  When the bike list value is probably £750 is it worth it?  Excesses (both compulsory and voluntary) are added together.  The std Bennets comp excess was £200, plus the default voluntary excess was £300.  So it wouldn't be worth making a claim for the hit on future moto and car insurances.

Protected no claims?  Irrelevant as you can switch to another provider who really care about the claim history. Plus if you don't expect to make a claim if you bin it yourself......

I'm starting to wonder if I should just for third party only!  Fire is unlikely.  Theft is possible, bike is kept on the street.  But had no aggro in the last 2 years here...

Insurance its all a con.

FWIW I'm in London and pay £80 TPFT for a 2000 reg FZS600.  Maybe I should have shopped around a bit more.

Ok ---right bennets just the insurance for me is
£63 fully comp with £250 excess (no vol )
£58 TPFF £250 ex - no vol
£58 TP only zero ex zero vol.
All of them with no claims protected
So it looks like I am right at the bottom of the price scale and it dont matter what I do that part isnt getting any cheepaer.
I supose if I had to change all of my gear at once I would say £500. And I do have the receipts for everything, but I would hate to think of a crash that resulted in it all being damaged
But the policy states this ----- A reduction for Wear and Tear will be made in respect of Helmet and Leathers, And there is a £50 excess.
As my gear is not that new, or each peice expensive- no I think it's a waste of time on the helmet and leather front.
As mtread has said I dont need to pay extra for injury claims as they ring me most months about my "recent accident" anyway (foc'ers)
Which only leves Leagal cover which I have always had which as I understand covers my uninsured losses whith one of them being my £250 excess. But is that even worth having, unless I can get it for £15 or less. Thank you andybesy for that tip.
And thank you everyone for your help
Punkstig I would not be suprised if all of these insurance "extras" are next in line for a miss-selling scandal with instances like yours

I dont bother with the extras, I joined the RAC which covers my car and bikes, it gets me and vehical back home, and not to the nearest garage (limit 10 miles) which some cover does, then what do you do to get you and the bike home? while being charged £20 a day storage.
I had a claim (not my fault) when I was with Carol Nash who gives free? legal cover only to find it was a firm that takes them on for free anyway, they were S**T to say the least.

Strangely that's why i stopped paying for it as well. I had tpft on a car which was hit by a full comp down lanes no centre lines so they wouldnt fight my case

I would say just by the fact they would drop £203 worth of policies to £55 highlights just how pointless it is to the buyer...
Insurance policies go up to cover cost of claims not down
