tickover for moto gymkhana
« on: 15 September 2013, 11:27:34 am »
I'm thinking of having a go at Moto G on an FZ6, one thing the guys do to help is speed the tickover up significantly.
As I understand it the FZ has an idle speed screw, does anybody know how much difference this makes, how fast can if be adjusted to. It would only be a temporary thing so no long term effect I think.
Also do both the early and S2 models have the adjustment screw.

Cheers

Having tried MotoGymkhana twice, I don't think you need to change the idle speed, I found it easier (especially on the GP-8's) to set the revs and then just use the clutch and back brake to control the speed.

Think the theory is if you can set a high tickover you don't have to worry so much about the throttle and just control it on the brake. As for clutch, was told by THE MAN that you only used the clutch if you were riding a ditch pump (ie a single cylinder).

Anybody know how high you can go with the tickover adjustment screw?

I've done a fair bit of Motogymkhana and I would say that if you've never done it before then don't worry about increasing the tick over. It does help but you then have to use more rear brake and the bike can run away with you if you're not careful. The best bike for Motogymkhana is the one that you ride the most and if you're used to it being set up a certain way then, in my opinion, it is best being left that way. I usually turn my tickover up to around 2,000rpm but it takes a bit of brain re-calibration and a lot of rear brake to keep everything in check.

Thanks for that trudd, I thought somewhere around 2k would be about  right.
Bikes I ride most often at the moment are a Daytona 955i which has 149bhp and a crap rear brake, I tried a bit of practice on it and even on just a tiny bit of throttle it just overpowers the rear brake, and a Versys 650 which runs so roughly low down that it's very difficult to stop it surging at very low speeds. Can't help thinking a mid size 600 is the ideal weapon, ie FZ6, I've had a couple of them before and whilst I don't regret getting rid of them (had both early model and S2) I look back and think just how good they were. Did track days on them, toured, all sorts and they were great at everything with the added bonus that other people didn't expect them to be any good.
So I'm having a go in a couple of weeks on my Daytona (for the lack of having anything more suitable) and then over the winter I might have a look for an FZ6 again.
