Motorcycle Pantaloons!
« on: 20 July 2013, 10:34:35 pm »
So I always used to wear kevlar jeans on my 125, but now I'm on the 600 (and the kevlars aren't fitting anymore..) I'm after some proper riding pants, felt a little naked wearing plain jeans the past couple of rides.

So a question -
I'm probably going to get textiles, seems as they're waterproof (usually) and have removable thermal linings, is there something I should look out for safety wise? Seen a fair few cheap pairs on fleabay but I wonder what I'm giving up safety wise for a few quid.

Cheap = usual things: poorer quality material, poorer stitching etc. You want to try them on to make sure that the knee armour is going to sit in the right place. On some, the cut is so bad you can end up with the armour down over your shins. My last pair I ended up taking the armour out of the knees cos they stuck out like a couple of duck bills when I sat on the bike. Best to go for reasonably well known brands. Spada are quite good and not too expensive. Weise I believe are quite good these days. I'm sure other people can recommend some other good ones too. Of course then you can go more expensive - Alpine Stars, Dainese etc, so should be something out there to suit your pocket.

Well, any abrasion restitant material will be better than bare skin!!

Experience tells me that you want ones with removable thermal lining. You can't take the lining out on mine, and I boil like a lobster in summer.

Oh, and don't have them too tight, cos then you stretch the seams and they'll leak.
Abrasion resistant material is no good if the seams tear apart cos of poor stitching.

They'll leak eventually. My balls still shudder at the mention of snow and the M3 (100 miles in heavy snow and leaky gear). Not nice.

We have recently had a load of the new Oxford waterproof trousers returned apparently due to leaking. When checked and tested, they were found not to be leaking at all, just the material gave a very cool feel when wet on the outside! My waterproofs I use for hill walking have this effect, but I'm actually dry underneath them. Breathable materials such as Goretex or equivalent can help to keep you a bit cooler = more expense tho.

If returned, and going cheap/free, could I beg some XLs? My genetalia and future children will thank you, when it rains, I end up sitting in a puddle of cold water. The water being inside my trousers.  :crazy

watch out for the material left behind when you DO remove the thermal lining!!

I've got a pair of cheap textile trousers and jacket, which are OK (especially in the winter), however, in the summer when you take the thermal lining out,  and only have boxers/shorts on the bottom underneath and a tshirt on top. where the trousers touch bare skin i.e. bottoms of legs and forearms, the material is that sort of shiny waterproof stuff, and it draws the sweat right out of you - its terrible.

Its so bad that putting a longsleeve T shirt on instead of short sleeved makes it much cooler as this material isnt touching the skin (im sure you know the stuff im talking about).

So if your in a shop looking, get that thermal lining out and have a feel :)

Hm the problem is in the shops most of the pairs I've seen have been around the £150 mark, and I just don't have that money at the moment. So trying before buying is a real ballache, as much as I'd prefer it. Suppose I can try a known brand in the shops then scour ebay for them cheap..

Yeah Mick, I know the stuff you mean. A lot of textiles have a mesh liner when you remove the thermal liner to help reduce this problem. Outdoor activities clothing is well worth looking through to counter this too - warm in the winter as part of a layering system, cool in the summer.

exactly what i did with my RST jacket. Saw it/tried it on in Hein Gericke, the bought online, saved about £60.

My textile 2 piece suit was cheap, Richa brand from ebay, and aside form the sweat problem noted above, its been ok really for the money (as I had to buy a big size and am a shortarse though, its too long for me and the knee pads are at my shins right enough, but thats my fault for being a fat foccer and not really a slight on the garment :lol

My textile trousers (from Wolf Racing) have a removable thermal lining, but I prefer to wear a pair of jeans underneath which work just as well in cold weather.

When it's too hot for that, I've got a pair of leather trousers to use instead.

But keeping ones testicles cool is one of the keys to increased fertility.

Admittedly freezing them off maybe somewhat counter-productive, or in this example should that be counter-reproductive?   :)
