I could do with a new ignition key for my Fazer. Got both keys when I brought the bike, but I was finding the one very clunky and difficult to use. Yeah I lubed up the ignition, WD40, Vaseline, 3-in-1 oil etc.  One particularly cold day in the winter, I turned the key and the whole Meta alarm key fob casing just disintegrated around the stub of a key. :(  The key looks ever so slightly bent and rather worn/discoloured on it's teeth.

So I just switched to the other key (and Meta keyring button), which worked perfectly and gave me no problems. However I assume this is the master key, and probably not such a good practice to use everyday. Right? Also, now I recently replaced the Meta alarm, I have a new key fob. I don't want to muck about with the master key to get it to fit into this key fob. Appears the metal needs trimming slightly and a hole drilled into to secure it into fob.

So, where can I get a replacement key? Will any good lock smith be able to do it? Will it need sourcing directly from Yamaha? Or is it going to be a new ignition barrel 'n keys bundle?
Also, any tips of fitting a key into the Meta key fob?

Bought my Fazer from Yamaha last year and they pointed me to Timpson for a new key. Works perfectly. It's even got the same shape plastic part at the end, minus the Yamaha branding.

Just got mine cut at the local locksmiths. They didn't have the right blank in stock when I went in, said "just need to order in a Yamaha-type blank". Had it done within 3 days. Again, same size and shape top as original. Do check your new key on all locks when you get it - occasionally, a key might work in say the ignition but not fuel cap and/or seat. If this happens, can be a case of just lightly cleaning up edges with a suitable file, or have it redone, but you'll probably have no probs.
Modern chipped keys are a bit more involved.

Depending on age and usage you may find that the barrel of the lock is also worn and a newly cut key may make matters worse. In which case you will need a new barrel. This happened with my van at around 80,000 miles.
Feel the Fear and do it anyway!

The previous owner provided a spare to the warn key that was being used. Ended up taking it to Timpsons and they cut it for free so was pretty happy with that and it works much better than the original I was provided :)
