Oil leak?
« on: 11 May 2013, 05:39:38 pm »
Went for a first longer ride on my 2001 FZS600. I saw my right foot and the right side of the engine were all greasy. A thin layer of oil. After some 400 kilometres, the amount of oil spilt was about 1mm lower on the leve checking window (from full, to full - 1mm leverl). So still well over half.

Tried to see where the leak was. Seems to be near the bottom right part of the engine. Either at the bolts, or at the seal. Hasn't happened before. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

I've marked the general area where the leak seems to be coming from. All the bolts in that area look suspicious. Though it could be some sealant between the engine and the engine side cover.

Any ideas?     :eek

There is no oil behind the cover you have highlighted (at least not as far as I'm aware) so if it's that far forward I'd suggest looking at the oil cooler / filter on the front of the engine. Mine had quite a fast leak and the entire side and underneath of the bike was covered in oil.

The other option is to replace the gasket on the clutch cover which is the cover next to the on you've highlighted towards the rear of the bike

I have the exact same problem at the moment, although it's leaking less than you describe.  I'm fairly sure it's not from the filter.

I need to give mine a decent clean and degrease, to see if it give any better indication on where it is coming from.

Will wipe it clean again, double check and put new silicone sealant tommorrow. See what happens. Definitely doesn't look like the filter, nor the oil drain plug.

Fair enough, only other thing it might be is maybe the seal around the sump?

But for now, cleaning it up is definitely the best bet. I would suggest once its clean to start the bike and leave it idling for 10 minutes or so to see if it starts leaking. This is how I found my leak as a little pool of oil started to form on the floor

Took off the cover that was highlighted. Put some black silicone seal. It seems to have stopped leaking. Will further test it this weekend I hope.

As a man falling from a 10th floor says: "for now everything is OK"     :)

Even washed the bike to make sure I spot any leak. None so far (knock on wood). Made several hundred kilometers, riding hard. No problems for now.

Thanks,  It's not clear from your pic which cover you mean.

Is it the '11 COVER, CRANKCASE 2 ' as shown here - http://www.yamahamotorcyclespares.co.uk/spares/epc2.asp?ModelID=9656&pageID=14&m=YAMAHA+FZS600+FAZER+CRANKCASE+COVER+1&uid=0

If so, I might see about replacing the gasket.

Can you replace that without having to drain the engine?

Yes, that one. No need to drain. Just put it on sidestand, wipe clean, put new silicone sealant. Black silicone, in a tube, like toothpaste. Something like this:

So far so good.
