« on: 30 May 2013, 04:16:31 pm »
Hello all! I know the guide is 28000 miles and im now at 29000. I have heard alot of people say they should be fine until 40-50. Bike is running fine etc.
Is  it worth doing now (bearing in mind im not an expert mechanic lol) Thanks alot! :rolleyes

checked mine at 40,000 and were just inside tollerences, chances are yours are ok if the bikes been looked after and not riden hard all its life  ;) ...for peace of mind they are fairly easy to check,if they need adjusting its a cams out jobbie  :rolleyes .....get up close to the engine and listen out for a slight tapping at the top end,if its quiet or really tappety they need attention.....my guess is at that mileage they will be fine  ;)
One, is never going to be enough.....

Use your ears, if you're not sure use a 'trusted' mechanics ears.
Personally I've never had my clearances checked -mk1 fazer 120,000 miles, thundercat- 120,000 miles!

Apparently, on the Fazer if the valve clearances go out (bucket and shim) the valves won't open as much as they should and you might notice a loss of performance...

Tbh mate is not that much of a hassle to check the clearances.its worth doing for peace of mind I reckon. Also you'll gain a wee bit of spannering experience.

Two separate tasks - checking and adjusting valves
Checking them is fairly easy, adjusting them is much more of a pain.  I would check 'em yourself & if any need adjusted (unlikely) put it back together & take the bike to a mechanic if u are not confident.

I'd agree with rufus. If in doubt always check it. If you can do basic servicing stuff without shearing the arse off bolts then you should be able to check the clearances with no problems. If you don't fancy it give it to a mechanic. Shouldn't cost much to get them checked.

Its an easier job to check these on the FZS 600 than the thou as there is less to remove (no AIS pipework etc).
Did mine last week @ 34000. Remove/Lift & support tank. Detach plug leads & move away from top of engine-note which lead goes where! Remove 8 allen head screws from top cover & 8 allen screws holding circular end caps. Also remove bolt that holds thermostat assy in position. Gently tap cover free with rubber hammer/block of wood.Carefully slide cover out on the left hand side- you may need to slightly lift the throttle cables out of the way. Remove generator cover-taking care with associated wiring. Secure this cover to side of engine out of harms way. The valve clearance check is described in Haynes manual. You need feeler gauges & possibly a torch. Took me an hour start to finish.

I had a listen and there is a slight tapping every 2 seconds or so but it sounds like its slightly behind the engine? Many thanks for all the replys! I can see this is going to be a useful site!

That might be the fuel pump. :)

a slight tick every two seconds means you're 0.02mm loose on the inlet of cylinder two :lol
