How much oil to put back in?
« on: 22 May 2013, 07:12:25 pm »
Just emptied the oil and removed the filter.

How much to put back in?

Service manual says:

Quantity

            Periodic oil change               2.5L
            With oil filter replacement     2.7L
            Total amount                      3.5L

wtf??

I believe it's more like 2.9 after filter change?

However, still over half a litre of old oil left every time - damn! :)

Slaninar, if the book says 2.7 and it's been said on here before around 2.7, then why would you say 2.9 ?
You're encouraging an overfill, and that ain't helpful is it, even though it's only 200ml?
I swear you must shake your bike upside down to empty it?  :lol

Fizzy Pies, you are safe chucking in 2.5 litres straight away without a problem, then start the bike for 30 seconds and watch the window.
The oil will raise then stop, although you may not see any straight away as it's not enough.
Then add a little bit of oil and repeat the above steps again, adding a bit at a time until it eventually stops where you want it, between the markings.

Well the guys on here told me this recently & i had no hassle-

If changing filter also, firstly chuck 2.5l in

Then start up the engine briefly to get get a true level reading.

Slowly top up until it gets to the top level on the sight glass, should be 2.7 but will depend how well you drained it.

The true ammount is irrelevant as it would be irresponsible to just bang 2.7 or 2.9 in without periodically checking the level 8) .

hmmm I might of put a little too much in then, I filled it till half way on the level, ran it. then added more till i could see it on the level again, this was around 2 and 3 quarter litres going of the bottle gauge.

As in 2.75 litres?
Bike on level ground, on centre stand?
Just run the engine for 30 seconds, switch off, then watch where the level goes, if it's under the top marker it'll do?

As long as you have the oil between the markings then it'll be okay.
When i bought my bike it had FOUR litres in it  :rolleyes

Have a read of this, i can't be arsed to fight my corner again.
I personally highly recommend it, whereas other people, not one who has actually tried it themselves i might add, say there's no need.
Totally up to you, it's your bike so your choice!  ;)
Can i just add though, if you're considering it, do it now while you've got fresh oil in the bike, so that you're not pouring it in then taking it out again in the near future.

I'll take that as a "NO" then?
It doesn't really matter if you've tried a million other products does it, 'cos those million other products are not this one!

I completely ignore the oil capacities in every way other than knowing how much I roughly need to purchase. Its a simple case of just putting oil in until it is within the min - max gauges on any vehicle. For the bike, it may well be 2.7 litres, I haven't paid enough attention to actually check :P

As for my car, there have been reports on the owners forum of anything between 4.5 to 5.2 (what Haynes says) to 7 litres!!  :eek

I think the main point is, you can definitely get away with pouring 2.5 litres in, without worrying about over filling, if you've just changed the filter, and then you just top up from there on.
