k@n filter cleaning

Hi can I use normal engine decreased on the filter as its way caked up with crud and I've got dome spare in the shed got the k@n cleaning kit comming but want to get the major mess off before I start it's been on my car for at least 2 years now without cleaning arrrrr

I used to use petrol to wash out (washable) filters before and it worked OK,,,
