Best Chain for FZS 600 2003?
« on: 08 February 2013, 10:31:55 am »
Hi all,

Looking for any advice on the best chain to buy? My chain has taken a beating over winter and will change it out in a month or so.

Cheers, as ever!  :)

Don't ask how I know...

:lol  Thought i'd ask anyway  :lol

Would I be correct then that most people go for the OEM kit instead of the renthal/tsubaki kit?

Then from what I can tell from on here the OEM kit, although more expensive, is the one to go for.

DID X Ring Gold heavy duty chain kit all the way for me, i'm very pleased with it.

After 10yrs of a shaft drive bike i really wasn't looking forward to constantly having to adjust a chain, but i've barely had to touch it.
As long as it's looked after and lubed properly it will serve you very well with minimal fuss.

Yes, a very good point darssi, maintenance is the best way to give it long life no matter what you put on it.

I just bought a DID X-Ring from M&P Direct. Haven't fitted it yet, but had no problems with DID on my other bikes.

Also, take note of Darrsi's advice. Lubing and a full clean every so often goes a long way. If you have the money and are lazy, buy a Scottoiler. I put one on my Bandit 1200 and got 30,000 miles out of the chain with little or no maintenace needed.

No, they came as a kit with the chain, and they've been absolutely fine.

Ok, I see them on Ebay. Was the OEM front sprocket different though, as in had a rubber part to stop chatter. Like a cush drive kind of thing? Or have a read someones post wrong in another thread...

Doesn't ring a bell at all?

My chain was fitted by my mechanic while he also changed my tyre last time, and i had the upgraded sprocket nut changed over too.
Good job as well, as it took him about 40 minutes to get my old sprocket nut off, 'cos it had welded itself on, which is better than flying off instead i s'pose!

Fair enough =) will have a quick look see if I can find the bit I read, although I was on nightshift so might have got it wrong. haha.

Anyway, glad it's not been a problem for you  :D

I'm going to have to check that sprocket nut thing in the next few days before I put my bike back together.

Yeah Chris, the oem front sprocket had a rubber (or hard plastic, I forget) thing on it, that is reckoned to have been there to quieten things down. Can't say I noticed much difference when I changed, although others have. Mine was so worn when it came off, it probably overwhelmed the rubber bit :lol

Woop! Didn't think I was going crazy...er... haha.

Fair enough, I guess in that case then the DID x ring kit would be a good alternative then as it's cheaper but an OEM kit wouldn't be a bad choice either. Anyone got any opinions on the renthal/tsubaki kit?

Have no idea about that brnd, but the DID kit is proven, popular and well worth the money.
If you go down that road go for the heavy duty gold one.

I am convinced, Heavy Duty Gold DID Kit it is.

Completely agree on the cleaning/maintenance point made earlier. Believe me I have tried! Been through a large can of Wurth Dry Chain Lube since the beginning of Jan as I have been applying it every day and clean chain at the weekend wash. However, I ride every day. And where I live (Aberdeen) is corrosion heaven at the best of times, but with all the snow and resulting treatments of the road it has been a losing battle. Spots of rust appearing in various places and the chain is one of them despite my best efforts :'( . So, as it has never been changed under my ownership I though an overhaul for the spring would be worth it.

Cheers again for all the help, invaluable.  :) :) :)

Go for it! Has your bike had the upgraded front sprocket retaining nut yet? if not would be a fine chance to get that done  :)

Yes, living next to the sea, although very nice, does have it's down sides. Living in shetland I am never more than 3 miles away from the sea at any time... needless to say things rust very quickly if not treated and cleaned regularly.

That was me, and that was what i was told by my Yam mechanic about a certain generation of bike with regards to chain noise. See older thread.
Don't worry about it, if it exists you don't need it.
