Part worn tyres,would you use them??

Hi guys 'n' girls, as the title says! " would you use part worn tyres?" i'm gonna be needing a new rear tyre soon but funds are getting tight! i don't think i would use a part worn front but deffo on the rear. But I was wondering    if its ok to mix 'n' match them? I know radial with radial & cross-ply with  cross-ply,but different manufacturers would be ok,wont they?? .

Some tyres don't work well together but its rare they give any real problems.
I would be happy to use a part worn front or rear as long as it looked ok and was priced right

sorry gotta disagree on this one. i rate tyres equal, possibly second only to brakes on motorcycles...or cars for that matter !. i fully understand when peeps say things are a bit tight ( could say that more or less covers everyone ) right now, but ask yourself, would you happily fit `part worn `brake pads to your ride? just my views and opinions........disregard this by all means, just give it some thought

always have done with bikes inc brake pads...........not with cars as you have a nice metal cage around you that gives you slightly more protection than just fresh air on a bike in the case of an emergency. i`m a great believer in having peace of mind rather than having permanently crossed fingers !!

Well i know it's down to people's own preference,i wouldn't put on used brake pads or used front tyre    but as my bike is my only transport i am trying to stay within a budget (minimum wage sucks) so i need to make savings somewhere?? I have bridgestone bt021's on my bike so i'm looking at about £125 inc fitting for a new rear tyre which'll last 5000ish miles? as where if i got some decent part worn's i could save money & get more mileage (maybe)??

part worn might be o.k. I know some lads who put race practice tyres on theirs and not had any problems.
don't use any that have come off a write off  or any that might have come off one, that's any if you don't know where they're from, you don't know if they have impact damage till it's too late.
I've just changed to maxxis got a pair fitted to loose wheels cost £180, seem ok  but only done 300 miles so far.

I would and have. You can see the week and year made on the side. As long as there is no major cutting etc where they have been on and off or puncture repairs, you should be OK - oh and not too old.
Stick to a martching pair and you should be right.
I've bought bikes with mis-matched and / or out of date tyres, which I feel is worse. but it is down to you, there are tyre shop sellers on ebay, just choose carefully from those who seem to know what they are selling.
My 2p worth.
 Saying that, my Fazer (bought this week) has Maxxis tyres on which I would never have chosen, but it feels fine, flops from side to side easily and I leant over further in the wet the other morning than I think I have for ages, that being on a bike I am getting used to. They are cheap enogh new, so maybe another option. get a new front the same later on.

Thanks for your replies  . i had Maxxis Supermaxx's on my xj900 diversion, they are really good tyres in all weathers & will probably go back to them eventually   i will see how it goes but using a part worn rear for now will help me out of a sticky patch! i reckon i've got about 500 miles left on my tyre

iv used  x track tyres for years on my bikes with no problems at all but i do know where im getting them from (ie a friend and there free!) i personaly wouldnt mix tyres but i know lots who do with no probs ,just be certain thet the tyre is in great condition with no damage and as already said check for the date as you dont want them to be to old

I've used part worn tyres and brake pads on a 300bhp car, even on track they were fine.  Better than the Goodyear F1s that I'd had previously as they started to melt  .  As far as the tyres go they were £100 per pair fitted with ~75% left... new they'd be £130 for the fronts, £190 for the rears.

had a maxxis rear fitted to my 600 a few weeks back......£83 fitted to loose wheel,at that price not worth bothering with second hand    you would probs need two second hand tyres for each new one,add to that the cost of fitting and iit would probs be more expensive........i used fwr in london

i recently had a puncture and couldnt source a new PR2 readily available, so had a part worn battleaxe fitted ( which was in nearly new condition ) only cost £60 quid fitted and lasted six months, wouldnt normally have done it but needed the bike and couldnt wait four days for a tyre. Worked out fine and had no problems

Life has a habit of hitting you in the wallet when youre struggling,but as others have said its better to use matched pairs and buy new if you possibly can. There are reputable suppliers of part worn but theres always an element of doubt ( hidden impact damage to carcass or has the tyre been run @ wrong pressure which could weaken it). Dont take chances on your tyres or brakes even if you have to beg,borrow,or steal the money,especially with the autumn/winter approaching. Good luck

If i could avoid having to buy part worns i would as the only thing that is touching the tarmac when your on your bike is the tyres so i would want to know that they are safe.  However i understand that a lot of the time money is a big problem and i tbh if i had to get new tyres now i would only be able to afford part worns and so would as i wouldnt want to be without my bike. I would however only ride sensibly and would go as fast round corners with them as i dont think i would trust them.
