trackday imminent - rearsets?
« on: 24 June 2012, 09:09:00 pm »
Going to do my first trackday on the fazer in August, question is, would rearsets be benificial or are they unneccesary?

if they are worth while, which ones do you recommend?

Thanks

Coxy

Have you got your pegs down on the road?
You.'ll be able to ride around a few touch downs,if your tyres are quality.
Of course if you're minted just buy some rear sets?
Sent from my villa in the South of France.

nearly new road pilot 3s.

just wondered if there were any cheap solutions out there. or its really a problem. I think I would be a bit concerned if I started grinding everything away.
I have touched down a couple times in 9 years of riding the bike, and I dont like it lol

that said its me boot that touches down well before the pegs anyway.

anyone tried these cheap universal rearsets?

I grind my boots a lot, also pegs now and then but if you adjust your riding style it can solve most of it.
I cant get the hang of hanging off more but if you can you wont touch down.
toes on pegs stops the boots touching down.
i did a track day at brands with no real issues. the cheapest option is to swap the OE pegs to some affter market ones that are angled on the edge. they give a fair chunk more clearance

once you get yer confidance the stock pegs are a limiting factor.I ground the hero blob away, and even started grinding the crash bobbins...which is a bigger problem as they dont fold up !
My advice is that when pegs start going down, you pretty much are at the cornering lean limit, and beware of going further, as if you do have something fixed which starts grinding ...it can dig in and bouunce you off...
if you can hang off it will help as you dont need to lean so far for similar speed.

I am not really a hanger offer, but maybes I will have to try.

was looking on youtube to see if there were any fazer 1000 trackday vids. None of Cadwell park unfortunately.
In fact not at all for the fazer, apart from this which looks like he can knock on a bit!

Any tips for the day?

My best tip for a first timer is just enjoy the day and the experience of the track. Don't push yourself to hard as its all new and easy to get carried away and throw the bike down the track.
It's great fun so enjoy the day.

Coxylaad - Relax and enjoy the ride at your pace  :)

Resist the temptation to follow the guy in front (he may be heading for the dirt!).

Have fun!

cheers guys. I will be certainly taking it at my own pace and enjoying exploring the bikes potential.

That guy above definitely doesn't appear to have any clearance issues, mind you they are pretty fast sweeping corners.

am excited!

I have a great pic at druids of me scraping pegs while gliding past on the outside of a knee down power ranger. Looks and style are not everything LOL.

I use the pegs as a guide to when to back off,  others go much faster than me but don't touch down anything because thier style of riding is much better than me.

Coxy
I have ridden cadwell many times, last time was last september on  warm sunny day. The clearance issue with the fazer aint on fast sweepers, but tighter corners, as the pegs will scrape at about 50 degree angle, which aint that much  given the stickiness of modern tyres.I hit the peg down hard at park corner which is a fast 90 degree corner. I could have gone  alot quicker too. Even though I have  a full Ktech suspension set up, weight matched springs etc...I still am very limited by ground clearance. On that park corner the crash bobbin ground out too, dug in ...which bounced the bike off line. Luckily I saved it and wobbled on. Its why I say once the pegs start dragging , beware of what else might be.
One fazer owner claims to have got his frame down too...so you can see the issue.
It wont stop you really having fun on  a trackday, but if like me, you start really pushing it trying to compete with modern sportsbikes, blades and dukes ( cos a jetted fazer is still quick enuff to dice with them ! )you will have ground clearance issues.
Hence why  now I only do trackdays for pure fun, knowing the ground clearance limits.

so use the pegs touching down as a guide to go no further.

I am building myself a TRX 850 with a TDM900 engine that I plan to use as the 'fun' bike that I can use for track days.
shouldnt have any ground clearance issues, and also wont have huge amounts of power so I can have fun lobbing it about.

Unfortunately its not ready yet so I am going on the fazer!

dont be put off, I have done about 15 trackdays on fazers, all over the Uk, and its just me maxxing it out which is the issue. Ridden " normally" you will start scraping the pegs a bit , and have  alot of fun etc...but just remember the fazer aint a racer , it does have limits, so ride accordingly. To me I always found trackdays to be so good as its a environment where you can explore just what your bike will do, usually far more than you think it will.It can have  a bonus on the road, especially if you are in an " overcooking " situation, as in yer brain you will know the bike will go round that bend !
