Chain cleaning
« on: 01 May 2012, 07:35:56 pm »
My chain could do with a good clean. Do I need to remove the rear hugger or is it easier to try and work around it? I have a 2002 model.

might be worth taking it off so you can clean any old crud off of it. what do the rest of you guys use to clean the chain that really works without damaging the rubber seals?

Cheers, P

I've always used WD40 to clean the chain. It breaks down the oil gunge nicely. Doesn't affect the o-rings. Wipe it off with a rag. Then a wipe over with Scotoil and run a Scotoiler on it. Lovely.

your old tooth brush

or a stiff paint brush

or a bottle brush

paint brush is best tbh. you don't need to go nuts on it.

I use white spirits & an old paint brush with half the bristles chopped off. No, not the left half or the right half, the first half of all the bristles.  :look

WD40 always...its great for cleaning , and being a water disperser and lubricant , wont harm the chain. Some guys just use wd as a lubricant too.. :)

WD40 is also the easiest way I've found of getting the fling off the back wheel.

And it gets grease/oil/grass stains off your clothes as well.
